Just picked up some 0W-40 oil from my Esso bulk dealer, he said that Esso has replaced their XD-3 with Mobil, is this true?

I am us this in all my vehicles, '06 Duramax diesel, '06 Jetta TDI (BEW) diesel, a '93 Ford Escort with a 1.9l gas and '85 GMC Van with a 6.2 diesel (none under warrenty).

Will the Mobil cause me any problems with any of the above vehicles, was using the Esso previously.

We get tempertures between -40c to +35c at times that is why I went to the 0W-40.

"Replaced" is an interesting word choice. The same oils are sold under different names around the world. His wording implies "discontinued".

Mobil 1 0w40 is significantly ligher than Esso XD3 0w40. I just looked at the datasheets. The Esso TBN is a lot lower though.

If it's Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0w-40, it's CJ-4/SM rated and should work fine with low sulfur diesel. Check the approvals on the bottle and match them to the engines.

Here's a link to the Product Data sheet:

This spring I bought 300 litres 0-40 XD3 and 300 litres 0-30 XD3 (Polar Plus from UFA) at 65% off, now I thank myself ten times per day for doing that if it is true that Mobil is replacing XD3.

Mobil makes XD3 too, I cant believe Esso/Mobil would take this great XD3 HDEO proven performer off shelves for agricultural, industrial and commericial use. It is a proven performer and I would personally use nothing but XD3 Group 1V POA.

I will say this on experience, many years ago when I talked to the Esso rep and I told him I was using 0-30 XD3 in all my gassers and he was upset and I belive he was because then I was paying $4.25 litre for group 1V XD3 rather than $8.00 for Mobil group 1V. Both oils were recomended for gassers. I was buying XD3 at bulk price rather than Mobil at store shelf double price. Is Esso is making the adjustment for a cash grab?

Ok so I was at my Bulk dealer today and...
Yes the XD3 0W-40 is no longer, it is Mobil Delvac 1 ESP but still at the XD3 prices. The only XD3 oil left will be 0W-30 as all of the other flavors of XD3 (not synthetic) are now Mobil Delvac 1300 Super.

So while I was there I bought a case of XD3 0w-30

After some looking, the XD3 0w-40 and the D1 0w-40 esp have identical specs. Well for what the Mobil pds gives you compared to the Esso one. I do not like the fact that Mobil will not state that it is a PAO like the XD3 did. It only says "is manufactured from high quality petroleum base stocks, carefully blended with selected additives", typical Mobil [censored] in my mind!

On the other hand the XD3 15w-40 and Delvac 1300 super are different oils and from what I can tell it is an improvment.

Interesting find on the specs. It does make sense to reduce the number of brand names that they manage, and I guess it didn't make sense to actually reformulate the product. What will change over time is the price.

If Imperial Oil is selling Delvac, they have to contribute some money to the marketing and advertising expenses for promoting the Delvac brand name on a world-wide basis. When the product was branded XD-3, it was a premium oil without the premium brand name or price. Not for much longer, I'd guess.
