I have a question that may be simple but I am not so sure. My new dodge truck takes Mid grade 89 octane gas according to my owners manual. However in my area many stations charge the same for mid grade and premium, about 1.58/gal. What I want to do is mix reg (87) with premium (93) to get a mid grade of 89-90. Normally I wouldnt worry about a few pennies but the difference between reg and mid grade is 22 cents/gal and my truck takes 36 gallons. Will mixing two grades give you a mid grade or is there something I am missing.

Mix away! Most gas pumps these days are "blend" pumps when it comes to mid-grade(plus) gas. All they do is blend Super & Reg to get plus. This works *Lots* better than mixing motor oil. Equal parts 87 octane & 93 octane should produce a good 90 octane mix. Won't hurt a thing.

How to tell? If a gas pump has only one hose, & offers 3 grades, it's a blend pump.

I didn't know that. Assume this is a reason stations go this way to save storage tank cost, two tanks in lieu of three???? Interesting

Octane is linear and yes it saves on service station tanks, trucking fuel, distribution ........

Thanks for the info. This should save me about $3 on every fill up, I just got free oil changes for life.
