This sounds like a dumb question considering I've done this with engine oil. My logic has always been if the engine is a quart low on oil and requires say 10W30, as long as you add something (example: 1 quart of 20W50) , that's better than running one low on oil.
I've got several leftover quarts of GL-5 from various cars I own.
One maintenance item left to do on my van is change the the differential fluid. I don't think it requires anything special. I had a 1996 Ford Explorer which had this mechanical AWD system where they took two limited slip differentials and mounted a transfer case between them. The rear required a synthetic lube + some additive from the Ford dealership.
If I had a quart of say 75W90, 80W/90, etc and mix them together, is this OK?
I also have some Royal Purple leftover from my Explorer. Can I mix this stuff with regular gear oil?
I mean as long as all of them are rated at GL-5?
