I need some help here.

Background: Mazda3, 2.0L. Vehicle had 2800 miles on it, when it ingested water (son got in too deep after a heavy thunderstorm). Block was cracked and a new engine was put in (after a fairly length argument with the insurance company, but finally won).

My brother-in-law changed the oil of new engine at 500 miles (3300 on the vehicle total). He only recovered 3.5 quarts.

Sump hold 4.5 quarts, check pavement for drops, there were none.

It appears that the car either burnt 1 quart of oil in 500 miles, or the dealer underfilled it when he replace the engine.

We checked the oil level a couple of times during the 500 miles and don't recall it being low, but also think that it wasn't to the full mark either (it is hard to read with clean oil).

If it was buring 1 quart in 500 miles, wouldn't I notice some blue smoke or something?

We are going to check the oil level very closely, once a week going forward.

What do you think?

Agree with Pablo's thinking. Figure about 1/2 qt in the filter (well, depending on size, could be from 1/2 cup to a qt). And, not all the oil will drain out--probably at least 1/2 quart still or more still hanging on inside.

Just keep checking the oil, and I think you'll be fine.

Thanks. The oil in the filter was drained (as well as possible) and the amount drained was included in the 3.5 quarts.
