My sons 2006 F150 5.4 shows a misfire code on #1 cyl. Is that the front plug on the drivers side or passenger side? Only time you feel a miss is when you go WOT. He lives in Florida so I'm not able to do the work, but I figure it's either the plug or COP.

#1 is on your right (passenger side) at the front.

From the front of the car/truck:

Probably a bad COP.

Thanks. I'll pass this on to him.

It's the plug or coil - not much else!
I think it is probably time to do all the plugs - that might be a smart idea.
You can check a coil at home by simply switching it to another cylinder. The code would then switch to another cl y. A crack or fault may not be obvious .

I had not heard of this. What is the problem? Is the the factory plug, or plug location? Thanks for the heads up.

if you have the long reach plugs then it's this bulletin,
the plugs carbon up on the inside and prevent removal.

if you have normal spark plugs then it's this bulletin below, referring to stripping out threads in the cylinder head.

what you can first do is verify which cylinder is misfiring,
then remove that coil and plug boot and swap it with one from a different cylinder. Clear the misfire codes, run the motor, and if the next misfire is on same cylinder then you know the coil is ok, if the misfire goes to the new cylinder you swapped to then it's a bad coil and/or plug boot.

check out the forums at F150online.com

tons of information about misfire codes and diagnosis. also all the information you would ever need about properly replacing the plugs on these engines. the plug breaking off inside the head is a VERY common issue. most dealer service departments also have a hard time with removal and uninformed customers normally get stuck with a $500-600 repair bill for a simple plug change.

Good info posted. A huge thing to stress is that you should let it sit out over night before trying to pull those plugs. You need that engine to be as cold as possible.

UPDATE!!
My son took his F150 to the Ford shop today and they replaced the COP and plug on #1 cyl and all is well. He always drops it off in the morning, they take him to work, pick him up in the late afternoon after work, so he can pick up the truck at the dealer.
