Pennzoil's PureBase, which is Group II and Group II+, used to be made at their Excel Paralube refinery, which was a joint venture with Conoco. This was before Shell bought Pennzoil. The hydrocracking and isodewaxing process used at this refinery is licensed from Chevron, so from that standpoint the base oil made there is essentially the same thing as Chevron's IsoSyn. No doubt Pennzoil now gets some of its base oil from Shell, but according to Johnny, they still buy quite a bit from Excel Paralubes, too.

Why do I have a gut feeling that the majors do a lot of "trading" base stocks according to plant capacity and reserves much the same as they do with gasoline?
