Might be the last set...how high should I go?

New tires typically come with 11/32 inch of tread and the lower limit is 2/32 for safety reason. 2/32 in NOT bald by any means. I feel 5/32 inch of tread is more than enough. Ed
I feel I should add a little bit here. I still have other things that I want done on the car, so this could be up to 6 months off. The reason I ask now is that I plan to have everything ready (including money in hand) when I do this...I may even have bought the tires!
And yes, I realize there is some tread left, but my wife is driving my son farther away to school, in which those miles are going to add up fast....

Good suggestions here, among limited choices. One more to consider: General Altimax RT, on sale at DTD online for $226 shipped to your door till Aug. 20.
I've never driven on Altimax, but I know folks who have, and there are lots of comments here. Mostly good, but not the best. Just what you are looking for.
Note: I am pretty sure that is the original RT, not the new 43 version that just came out. It's made in either Brazil, (more likely) or Mexico.

When I look at that tire I was thinking about the warm winter in So Cal, and probably less than 15-20 raining days(a light shower is a raining day here, a half inch rain is a winter storm) a years.

Though I have limited choices...pretty much the Defender, BFG Touring/Advantage TA, or the Tiger Paw AWP. Just how much difference would I be looking at with these three? Prices are around Defender-101 /BFG TAs-73/ TPs-75 per tire.
And when I said other choices, I only meant a few- either the Cooper CS4s/Mastercraft Anvengers or the Yoko Avid touring-S. I'm not playing guess who made what tire any more...I guess I should be happy that in the size for this car (195/70/14s), you either get high end or chinese junk....
Of course, comments good or constructive are welcome......
Stay away from the master craft, they won't last you two years. I've had good luck with Yokohama (its all ive ever bought) and they wear well but I'm not sure the touring will last you quite that 3 years. I would bite it and buy the defenders. Super long wearing tire. Our yoko avid ascends have been great though, 45,000 miles and still have 7/32 left. Our yoko geolandars have 20k and 11/32 on them.
Either one of my yokos or the defenders I recommend.
Okay...after updating my wife's car, one of the last things I will do is put a set of new tires on it to replace the current Kelly Navigators, which are at about 5/12ths right now. Curious to know why the bad vibe with the mastercraft. This particular one happens to be the sister tire to the CS4. While Cooper's lower end tires are not bad, I need a tire with some meat on it...
Yokos and defenders are still high on my list. As much as it would pain me to spend a 100 bucks per tire, I still may bite the bullet on them....(though at least wait for a rebate..)
