Hey guys,

I haven't posted here in a while but I have been mostly a Honda/Acura family so very easy on the maintenance. Hoarding on Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra sales and using the same oil and grade for all my vehicles. This is the first German automobile in the family and its brand new so I have some time to figure out what oil I want to use in it. I will be maintaining it my self and will be doing early oil changes (probably 5-8K on the first one).

I am picking up the car tomorrow so haven't looked at the oil cap yet however based on the owners manual online it does require 229.5 rated oil. It looks like Mobil 0w40 meets that spec, its on sale and is regularly on sale here in Canada.

What do you guys recommend? My driving habits, regular driving in traffic, some spirited driving, no tracks. This car will be driven all year so winter weather performance is a characteristic I need to take into consideration. I am also looking at long term ownership of this vehicle (yes kind of sketchy on fine german automobiles lol) so wear protection is of importance.

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w40 is a good choice.
Amsoil Euro 5W-40 is another.
Several good choices. I would prefer the 2 above, but many others are excellent choices, but those are my personal 2 favs for MB 229.5 (used to have 2 oldies requiring 229.5. Now down to 1)

You can pick anything on this Mercedes Approved list and be OK. All meet the minimum. Just some are better than others.
Mercedes 229.5 Approved list
Beware the language of manufacturers. MB states that ONLY oils that say "MB APPROVED" are actually proper oils.

If Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w40 is easy and priced right for your area, no need to look any further!

And only use Mann/Mahle/Hengst/MB filters in FLEECE. I tried a Fram Ultra and it was terrible. Paper filters are also definite no-no.
Enjoy. They make a great machine!

Good post above, lots of oils you'll find are "recommended for" but not actually approved. For me it's basically been a steady diet of either Edge or Mobil 1 0w40 and the aforementioned Mann fleece filter, easy peasy.

It's funny that you say only use oils on that list, but then you go ahead and mention Amsoil which isn't on the list. The favorites are typically Mobil 1 0w40 and Castrol 0w40. They're both on the list unlike Amsoil. I wouldn't bother paying more for oil that's not approved.

The Amsoil 5w40 is now on the Bevo approval list, but I believe this is a fairly recent addition to the list, but I also see no reason to deviate from the tried and true M1 or Castrol choices that are so popular for a myriad of good reasons.

What's wrong with using the Pennzoil Platinum Ultra you already have. Isn't it 229.5

As far as I am aware the need for a fleece filter is a total mystery in Europe. In fact nobody would be able to tell you what a fleece filter was. We just use branded filters like Bosch, Hengst, Wix or Mahle.

Don't think the regular PU is 229.5 rated. I think I'm going to go with Mobil 1 0w40 as people here love it.

Amsoil 5W-40 has been on the list for several years. Plainly listed in the 229.5 Approved list. Screenshot attached.
And I also said twice that M1 is a good choice.

Sorry, missed it on a quick glance through the list. It's just a head scratcher to me why you would even bother to recommend an oil that's 3-4 times more expensive that Mobil 1 especially with the current rebates available on it.

I sell Amsoil EFM 5W-40 for $5.75/qt. I highly doubt the M1 is $1.44/qt. You don't have to use or like Amsoil, but please don't write things about Amsoil unless you use factual information. Thanks!

With the current rebate of $12 and the price at Walmart for about $25.97 for 5 quarts, that works out to $13.97 or about $2.80 a quart. I think Costco has it for $26.99 for 6 quarts and the $12 rebate brings it down to $2.49/quart.

It's one of those things where Amsoil is so hard to find published prices that they're not doing themselves any favors with their current sales methods. Anyway, the original point remains, why pay 2x more?

I would go with Castrol Edge because it seems to shear down somewhat less quickly than Mobil 1 does from various UOA.

OK, you sell Amsoil for 5.75. How much you sell 5W40 (cannot remember designation) that meets BMW LL-04? is it as easy to get it is M1, Valvoline, Castrol, Amazon? That is the point. I was looking Amsoil web site, but whatever I do require me to do a lot of digging to get to something and still prices is $10+ per quart.
So I am all ears how to get Amsoil for $5.75 and is easy to order as average oil on amazon?

The AFL 5W-40 is $7.79/qt. It's delivered to your door. When you go to the web site you just see the MSRP currently. Not as easy as if you already have a $100 Amazon Prime account , but once you are sign up as a Preferred Customer (PC), yes easy. If you want to sign up contact me or just use 515729 as your referral number. Thanks.

Pablo,
I admire your persistence.

I use many different oils, as my sig shows. Not devoted to any particular one. My current stash has 2 gals of AMZ EFM 5W-40, about 7qts Castrol 0W-40, and 7 qts of LM Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40. ALL are MB229.5 Approved AND BMW-LL-01!

OP asked if the oils he listed were any good. Yes they are.

I understand that cost is a factor. I leave it up to the buyers to determine what they purchase. OP can't go wrong with Approved oils, whichever he picks.

OK< actually I might give it a try once I use stocked up Valvoline.
Any indication whether Amsoil plans to get approval for 5W30 (sorry forgot again name) for BMW and MB? I know it has for VW 504.00/507.00?

European Car Formula 5w30 Improved ESP Synthetic Motor Oil = Product Code: AEL. BMW LL-04? Mercedes Benz 229.51?

I doubt it, but it's worth asking. I have asked HQ.

It meets VW504.00/507.00. Oil looks really good on paper (HTHS and NOACK). Reason why I use Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 mostly (trying Valvoline) is HTHS and NAOCK. Amsoil looks even better (though NOACK is bit higher, but not as high as most oils).
I would not mind trying that, but my BMW is still under warranty.
