Hi Guys.

I just got my wife a 2005 Honda Accord (2.4l). It calls for 5w-20 oil. I am going to leave the factory fill in for 5,000 miles and then switch to M1 5w-20.

My question is this: the manual says OCI should be 5,000 severe service and 10,000 normal service. My wife drives highway miles everyday to work...140 miles round trip, and sees stop and go traffic once she arrives in town for about 5 miles to her workplace.

Is that considered normal or severe? What do you think? Will the M1 5w-20 work well for her?

There is nothing severe about that. Mobil 1 should easily be able to go 10,000 miles with driving like that.

NB: If it were mine, I'd get the factory fill out of there at around 2000 miles, not 5000.

Mulaka, I have the same car. 2005 Accord with the 2.4L. I have 4,000 on the factory oil now. I've seen UOA's with the factory oil at 5,000 miles, that is why I left it in. Change it out at 5k or so, and put in the Mobil 1 5w-20. If you want a bit more peace of mind, use the new Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 year round. These engines are tough.

G-man speaks truth. Well except maybe you could go a bit longer on the factory fill, but it seems either way does no harm. It's just that I am becoming fanatical about the world's precious oil.....

"The world's precious oil." Pablo, I know you are referring to GC...I mean, what oil could be more precious than that?

PS I am comfortable with G-Man II's advice.

I'd definitely do 10k OCIs. After warranty, Id probably stretch that a few thousand more if I could.

Based upon what has been said on this forum, leave the factory fill in for the full 10k. Maybe change the filter partway though.

I personally would never leave the factory oil in for 10K. That's just me. I am also less inclined to leave oil in for 10K miles..although I have done it. I have come full circle from shorter OCI's to longer back to shorter. Also I like changing the oil filter at around 5K or so. And since I do that I just as soon change the whole thing out.

Given what you have said, NORMAL.

I have a 2004 Honda Civic and will change the EM Honda 5w20 OEM fill at 10,000 miles (9100 miles now). The Honda's owners manual and web site make a big deal out of leaving the OEM fill in for the full service cycle (normal=10,000 miles, severe 5,000 miles)

I will switch to Mobil One 0w20 for I got an 80,000 mile stash of it. After that, I will go to the new (probably by then old) Mobil One 5w20.

My goal is to clock over 250,000 miles.

Please do get a UOA on this change!

It would be very interesting and see how your engine did with breakin.

What do you think?

I have 4,100 on the OEM fill right now. I was going to change it tomorrow and put Honda 5w-20 back in for about 2k miles then switch to Mobil 1, but I might hold off a bit. I found a case of M1 0w-20 at Pepboys today. If I bought that and what ever else was left, I could have about 18quarts of it.

I'd run either the Mobil 1,EP formulation (5w-30) or Amsoil (0w-30) and go at least 15,000 miles between changes under these conditions.

The 5w-30/EP formulation has a much more robust additive package than the GF-4 rated, 5w-20 version of Mobil 1.

Now that the Mobil 1, Extended Performance is available, I see NO USE for the GF-4 stuff at all, since the price difference is less than $1.00/qt. The EP stuff meets API/SL specs and will work fine in any brand new motor. I'd certain hope that Mobil would stand behind the quality of this EP product, even if it doesn't carry the GF-4 rating ....

The Motorcraft 5w-20 is another great option. The more I read, the more I believe that modern additive technology has allowed lower viscosity oils to perform as good as any high viscosity oil.

But the problem is many car makers still have a 7500 mile max OCI for warranty to remain in effect. So the need for a good GF-4 still exists. Why spend the extra $ for an oil you will drain in 1/2 its advertised life when a cheaper ($ wise) oil will work?
