I just went out and bought nearly 4 cases to start using in my '97 Ranger,'03 Ranger, and '94 Corolla. The Corolla has 187000,'97 Ranger has 33000,and the'03 has 9400 and all of them have been changed 3 to 5000 miles religiously. Some of the posts I have read scares me"concerning oil leaks" PLEASE ADVISE!! Thanks in advance!

Need more info on that. Are you concerned that the BRAND or the VISCOSITY will cause leaks?

Gotta ask - If this is a concern, why did you buy 4 cases of the stuff?

If they are not leaking now and you're using the same grade as you have been why would it leak?

Those are fine oils. You have alot of it, enjoy.

I'm concerned with leaks with what I've read about synthetics and blends since I have never used anything other than dino in these vehicles.

MC is Dino.

Just GRP 3 which is now sometimes refered to as synthetic.. but it is not.. but performs nearly as well.

Indeed it does.

suggest you search around this board for information about grps 1, II, II+, III. IV $ V

As well as the definition debate over what to call synthetic. Conventionally only gro IV and V are considered synthetics. Groups 1-3 are all processes from petroleum. The higher the grp the more highly refined and the less impurities are in the oil. Grp III is so clear that the base stock is actually clear before the additives and dye is added. It is not synthetic but has similar performance characteristics. I am a neophyte here as well so I hope a more knowledgable person steps up to explain this better to put your mind at ease.

Fear not, you bought a very good oil and it should not be a problem in motors that are not already leaking oil. Which motors do you have in the Rangers? I have owned three consecutive Rangers (92, 97, 2002) with the 3.0 and its a great little motor.

The "synthetic" in the Motorcraft oils is actualy Group III dino oils. There has been tons of debate on this board and other places as to whether a Group III oil is really "synthetic". But it seems to offer similar performance as traditional synthtics, so they are getting away with calling it synthetic. At the $1.42 a quart they are charging at WalMart for MC oils, the Group III is a good deal. At $4.49 which they are charging for Group III Castrol Syntec, it is (IHMO) NOT a good deal.

At any rate, even a traditional synthetic (group IV, V) would not cause leaks in an engine that is well sealed. Your Rangers will be fine.

What is the difference between MC synthetic blend @$1.42 and Schaeffer's synthetic blend @$3.00? Are they worlds apart in make-up and quality?

The MC is a Group II/Group III mix

The Schaeffer's 7000 is a Group II+/PAO mix. It's also A3 rated and can be used in expensive European cars. It's good stuff, but depending on your application may or may not be worth the price.

Here's the data sheet on the 5w-30 weight 7000 blend:
