Mazda CX-7 6MT transmission fluid

I have this SUV and this is my first change for trans and diff. I read in manual that for transmission lube i need GL-4 75w90 so i have a couple of candidates below.
1) Redline MT-90
2) Ford Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid XT-M5-QS

However, i accidentally came across ENEOS configurator for my model (europe site) where the recommendation was for ENEOS premium 75w90 which is GL-5. There was no 75w90 GL-4 instead.

I compared their viscosity specs and they are all similar and also ENEOS is MT-1 tested so supposedly yellow metal safe for the synchros. My question is whether you would suggest to use ENEOS 75w90 or just play it safe and use only the GL-4 ones?

What do you think?
 
I had a 2007 Corolla which took the same GL-4 spec in its manual transmission. I played it safe with Redline (it was either MT-90 or MTL, I don't recall), which was GL-4 only. Man, that box shifted smooth with the Redline fluid.
 
Thank you guys! Im in favor of MT-90 too.

Anyone about ENEOS? What i would like to know is why this GL-5 can't be used (besides the obvious keep off answer manufacturer knows best)? Will it cause extreme wear to the synchronize? But why is the viscosity almost the same?
 
The ENEOS mentioned is primarily a differential oil from their website:

Dedicated MTF's such as Redline MT-90 and Amsoil MTG have slightly lower viscosity for improved shifting in cold weather. In addition, these fluids contain specialized friction modifiers for the synchro assemblies that DIFFERENTIAL fluids do not provide.

Remember, a 75W90 can exist in a rather wide viscosity range:

A CX-7 with a manual transmission? I am jealous! I wouldn't use a GL-5 fluid - the sulphur additives are not good for the bronze synchronizers. Even if the transmission is rated for both GL-4 & -5, I would play it safe and use GL-4.

I'm very happy with Redline 75W-90 MTF (GL-4) in a 2001 Mazda Protege & a 2009 Mazda 5 - excellent shifting in both!

Most modern GL5 today meets ASTM D130-12 Copper Strip Test 1a or 1b , among other things with the inclusion of metal deactivators in its additive system.

It's an indication of copper/brass friendliness , and I would consider any present day GL5 with ASTM D130-12 Copper Strip Test 1a or 1b ratings, as safe for present day yellow metals.

I would bypass a GL4 and consider the use of a GL5 with D130 1a/1b rating.

I hear you Molakule, but based on ENEOS recommendation i started the whole digging thing in the first place as whether a GL-5 rated gear oil could be used to a manual transmission which calls for GL-4 or not. The thing is that the description is application does not mean that this GL-5 gear oil is mutually exclusive for synchronized transmissions and does not contain similar chemistry similar to the specialized friction modifiers for the synchros as you mentioned. Is there any VOA or UOA to check this ENEOS 75w90 premium regarding its compounds?

I would normally agree but the thing is that my car is manufactured in 2008 and the aforementioned MTL GL-4 like MT-90 or Ford X5-MT have been fully tested and they work without causing any problem to the transmission whatsoever. So we cannot claim that GL-4 oils are NOT the right choice. The proper question would be whether SOME GL-5, when they meet specific conditions, could be used for SPECIFIC, synchonized transmissions which originally call for GL-4 oil.

ANyhow, besides the J2360 passed indication which this oil carries, there is a logical leap here. Its excellent resistance for wear, corrosion, foaming and Oxidation compared to a GL-4 may be true but that does not mean that it wont cause MORE harm to the synchros than for example MT-90. The yellow metal safe indication does NOT mean that it wont cause more harm to the synchros. The one does not necessarily contradicts the other.

I dont know how can we ever be sure unless we used such a product or tested it for similar case/application. Comparing their viscocity based on 75w90 GL-4 chemical compound since they seemed alike, make me believe that corrosion effects had to be similar.

I am not sure of anybody here claiming a GL4 oil is NOT the right choice for applications that call for GL4.

Having said this, it doesn't mean an appropriate oil like Eneos in question is not suitable and thus cannot be used in applications that calls for GL4.

Assuming Eneos' performance level claim are real, it's GL5 performance level claim is insignificant in our context. It supposedly has, not only SAE J2360 approval but OEM approvals of several reputable manufacturers. Without going further into specific details, I would venture to guess these approvals are inclusive of synchronised transmissions.

Btw, automotive gear oils can be tested for J2360 approval or any of above mentioned OEM approvals.Though the same cannot be said for GL4 , IIRC.

Corrosion effects caused by this Eneos vis-a-vis a GL4 is a non-issue, unlike a GL5 of 15 to 20 years ago.
Inadequate operating viscosity would not cause corrosion effects on copper/brass synchros , however it generates unwarranted irreversible component wear in transmission bearings and gears, and occasionally synchros.
 
I'd use and recommend the GL4 75w90 from Ford, GM, Redline, Amsoil, Ravenol, Castrol, Millers, Maxol, Comma, Fuchs, LiquiMoly, ... Wouldn't be suprised if the Valvoline and Pennzoil GL4's were available too.

OP is in Greece. Euro market has a pretty good selection of MT GL4, GL4+, and GL5 fluids. Lazy US consumers have abandoned manual transmissions.

Problem with GL5, you're at the mercy of the blender. Old data but worth a read:

If a GL4 is available, use it. If no GL4 is available, use the non-LS GL5 or MT specific/recommended GL5. Eneos, Redline 75w90NS, MotulGear300, Subaru, ... are some.

Thank you for your feedback Zeng. Your points trouble me a lot and can't decide the way forward.

I researched the internet for gear oil new standards and tests Automotive Gear Oil tests but my understanding is that SAE J2360 basically includes the updates for GL-5 and MT-1 lubes so basically refers to non-synchronized transmission. So i cannot really guess that it is inclusive of synchros since it is not specifically stated (one word would make me happy).

It was ENEOS properties that confused me (make me shoot all these questions in here) since also the viscosity index is same so i would guess that we are talking about MTL oils with close chemical constitution. I am not a chemist but you can't just add 2 elements e.g. sulfur, phosphorus without affecting its properties.

I sent also an email to ENEOS asking about what they think for my application and i will share of course their feedback.

Your car is supposed to use a GL-4 fluid ONLY. There are many of them available in Europe. Do NOT use GL-4/5, 4+, ect.

Find a fluid brand that makes this available, there are quite a few, including Castrol Syntrans, ELF, Lubro Moly,
Valvoline, Shell Spirax S6, ect.
