I have a 93 Mazda B2200 that makes a racket on cold startup. It gets worse in cold weather, and is kind of sporadic, but is pretty much always there.
I know its hyd. lifter noise, and it goes away in about 10-20 seconds, but still, I don't like it. I'm using Mobil 1 5W30, and Purolator filters.
I think I'm doing the right thing with oil/filters,any thoughts?

Yep, thats the standard Mazda HLA noise. Very common in pretty much all Mazda motors of that vintage. My Miata had it and I did a double AutoRX cycle and it cleared up. That along with using the 5w-30 M1 after the cleaning will go a long way to keeping it at bay. Worked like a champ for me.

I have an 88 B2200 that just started doing it yesterday. Was running cheap Wal-Mart 10w-40 and 20w-50. Put Rotella T 15W-40 in it and it clacked like crazy the next morning! It is an oil burner (190k miles) and needs a re-ring which I'll do soon.
I was really surprised the Rotella oil made it clack so bad until it warmed up, about 1-2 minutes then it purred. It was pretty cold that morning.

My 1987 B2000 used to make a racket on start up, I've tried everything, finally I tried some 10W-40 Citgo from the dollar tree and it seems to be a lot quieter now, go figure.
