Caps locked?

Piston slap on cold startup scared me to death when i bought a 1997 Outback (2.5L boxer) used. Having been an auto tech in my youth, and a tribologist in my adult life for 10 years, I first thought "oil"! Turns out that this noise is typical of the engine, and Subaru even coated parts oif the piston with molybdenum to reduce its deleterious effects. Once warmed up, the engine (at 95k miles) is smooth and quiet.

I use either Amsoil 10w30 full syn, or Valvolines MaxLife, which is a **** fine oil at any age of one's car, and a great value. Although i normally abhor additives, I do run a bottle of Maxlife's Engine Protector in the summer - it has cleaners, AW and anti-friction addtives, and much higher levels of moly than one would see in today SL-rated oils: around 5-6% by weight. Piston slap is greatly reduced at startup, and compression came up about 10 psi. These engines are known to last a long time, which is what i want for my "beater" car. My other 2 rides art a SC'd 2003 SVT Mustang and a 2004 honda S2000 - both of those get the primo oils.
