I found this kind of odd that my 2015 RX Manuel states if 0W20 oil is not available. Use 5W20 conventional? Not 5W20 Synthetic? And it goes on to state 0W20 must be installed the next oil change?? Really? What do you all think of it?

It has to do with government fuel mileage regulation's I think. The engine was Certified using 0w20 which may not always be available.

just found it odd, well kinda cool that they suggest 5W20 conventional as a second choice. but the way they mention go back to 0W20 the next oil change makes one think engine damage may occur or something. (i know it wont) but there are some folks that may take it that way.

I don't think 5-20 dino is THE second choice, but is at at the very least a choice. In other words, all 5-20 will do until the next OC.

Anybody using conventional motor oil in a Lexus should be tied to a chair and flogged with synthetic oil Technical Data Sheets, its the BITOG way.

I've always thought that they do that so the manufacture can say their cars don't require synthetic. Otherwise if they said you had to use 5w-20 synthetic, then people would say the cost of ownership is higher. Now granted the overwhelming majority of 0w-20 it's synthetic, but they aren't saying synthetic is required.

Is the word "replenishment" used anywhere in there?

My Subaru also specs 0W-20, then 5W-30 or 5W-40 conventional may be used to top off/replenish. Then change back to 0W-20 at next OCI.

Lexus driver who used conventional oil (James Bond did that):

What's so special about Lexus V6 vs one found in a Toyota?

This is a classic case of people reading too much into the warding than there is to it. CAFE requires manufacturers to "encourage" the use of whatever oil viscosity was used to get the official EPA mileage sticker.

If a certain performance level is required form the oil, the manufacturer will create a specification that the oil has to meet. Why would a manufacturer use such a vague specification as "synthetic"? That word has no technical meaning what so ever.

Valid point there. Though, "synthetic" does mean Class III or Class IV, technically. Like in dexos1, GM never said it had to be synthetic, though the performance requirements mean nobody can make a Group II conventional oil good enough, it has to at least be a synth blend.

Does Toyoda/lexus have a "Genuine Motor Oil" spec beyond ILSAC GF5? Synthetic is a meaningless term in oil as far as performance goes - don't you know this by now? Most All top brand "fully synthetic" GF5 are refined mineral oil.

SN/GF5 carry the service cat and spec not "synthetic".

I think the owner manual should states that 5W20 can be used to top-off, without mentioning conventional or synthetic. It is up to owner to choose what he/she can get at the time.

Beat me to it!
Cafe standards aside, 5w20 vs 0w20 doesn't matter at operating temps. So unless you short trip the thing a ton I wouldn't think 5w would be a big deal.

I just talked to Manuel and he says nothing about conventional oil.

1. 0w20
2. 5w20
