The less stuff you are running in the background on your computer the better in my opinion. I would stick with the Windows firewall and either contact your ISP or go the the web site of your modem manufacturer and set the hardware firewall to the best settings recommended for security.
Windows Security Essentials seems to work well and does not pole the processor hard like several others.
Only change I made under settings was to change the "When" to Daily. Time to when I may have the computer on, & removed the check mark from "Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use. By doing this the computer will download the latest anti-virus software then scan the computer in the background.
No amount of security will prevent some of the stuff going around now that tricks you into installing it.
Good browsing habits are a plus too.
You may want to give Linux a try when you have time. I recommend Linux Mint for new Linux users as it has the codex and plug-ins already installed.
