Al, it's just "panem et circenses".

The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition. 2002.

bread and circuses

A phrase used by a Roman writer to deplore the declining heroism of Romans after the Roman Republic ceased to exist and the Roman Empire began: “Two things only the people anxiously desire—bread and circuses.” The government kept the Roman populace happy by distributing free food and staging huge spectacles. (See Colosseum.) 1
‡ “Bread and circuses” has become a convenient general term for government policies that seek short-term solutions to public unrest.

Al,
as long as the Prime Minister turns up to watch the cricket, you know that Australia is going well...by definition.

Just sit back, watch the Jackson case, the investigation into steroids etc and enjoy the ride like the rest.

I'll watch them squirm as we watch Oil prices go above 55 bucks a barrel.

now, if they can't clean up the national pastime, how could they do anything else?

i mean, you have to have your priorities straight...

right?

if we were watching baseball while all that other stuff you mentioned was going on, we want to be sure it's not steroid laden.

Al: As usual your right on the money. It doesn't seem to matter which party is in office either.
There has been a dumbing down in America which also contributes to our decline.
Off Topic: I posted a couple of days ago about a lawsuit on behalf of Tsunami victims. America is named in the suit because our tsunami warning system in Hawaii failed to warn. Does the words
TORT REFORM apply here or what. LOL

Watching some congresmen on the news last night... these guys are steamed that they gave MLB an anti-trust exemption, and now MLB refuses to cooperate with their steroid investigation.

If MLB isn't careful, a peeved congress can really put the hurt on them.

But I agree. Let's have congress investigate baseball right after they solve all of our country's real problems...

Having Congress investigate baseball makes about as much sense as baseball investigating Congress.

If you visit Washington, don't drink the water. At least, I suspect that's what makes them all get that way.

Being in a "kinder, gentler" mood today, I'll spare you my real feelings.
