My '00 VW GTI 1.8T will be due for an oil change by this weekend. It will have 50,500 miles on the clock by the weekend. I have plenty of M1 & GC on hand. I would appreciate the BITOGers' opinions on which one to use. They are both the API SL version, if that would sway any opinions.

The oil will be in service for approx 12 weeks, which is how long it takes me to rack up 5000 miles. Daytime temps. here in North Alabama during those 12 weeks will be 80°-90°F. I do 95% highway driving at avg. 65 mph.

I don't really have a favorite oil between the two. My VW doesn't seem all that picky about oil. So, I will tally the BITOGers' votes at the end of the week, & which ever oil wins, that's what I'll pour in.

Because I already have the other two & I'm not going to buy anymore oil until I deplete my current stock...translated = wavinwayne is a cheapskate.

LOL! Well, then my vote is for M1. You'll always be able to find M1, but may not always able to find GC. For only 5K, M1 gets my vote.

Scorecard:
M1: 1
GC: 0

Woohoo! 2000 posts!

I just peeked under the valve cover of a 1.8T that pretty varnished up at only 30K miles

.It has probably ran dino up to this point.

I recommended that M1 0W40 be used from here on to the owner.

It's the only oil i've seen that clearly states that it cleans varnish and sludge formed it high temperature applications.

It will keep your engine in tip top condition

and it's widely avalible.

If the M1 is 0w-40 use it. My roomate's GTI 1.8T runs well on M1 0w-40.

Otherwise GC is a good choice.

Actually, overall, GC is a good choice, but Id probably go with a 40 wt oil in that engine.

Yep.....the GC is M03 vintage green.

Wow, I can't believe GC has not earned a single vote.

I like to keep my iron where it belongs and not in the UOA so I'm voting for GC.
