M1 and Redline blend

Your probably fine, but I would just use one or the other. I'd probably use the new Mobil 1 10w-40 EP oil. Readily available also.

I was under the impression that some people on here has good luck using the redline to "beef" up the additive package in the M1 is this not true?

Yes, I think some have done that, but with the EP oils, their is no reason to do that IMO. You also might want to run Amsoil's 5w-40 AFL oil.

I've always had good results with such a blend. I found 1 quart of Redline to 4 quarts of Mobil1 seemed to work almost as well as 2 quarts of Redline to 3 quarts of Mobil1 (on a 5 quart sump). Not sure if the cost of the second quart was justified by a small decrease in wear that I saw over the one quart. But your sump may be larger as well.

My theory was that Boron and Moly are probably the two best additives out there right now, in addition to Zinc. Redline has lots of moly but almost no Boron. Mobil1 has a good dose of Boron but mediocre levels of Moly. They both have zine in differing levels. Redline boosts the cleaning abilities by virtue of it's makeup. Overall cost of the blend makes a great bang for the buck oil IMO on a hard driven street car. For all out racing I always used straight 100% Redline OCI's.

Good golly it's my old buddy David Tittermary! How ya doin bud?? I haven't heard from you since Memphis 1998 when you let me drive your 1LE Camaro! Glad to see you're back in an LS1 powered vehicle again!

Knowing how you drive, you definitely need a nice robust oil!

I'm getting good results in my LS1 Corvette using the German made Castrol Syntec 0w30. But since you'll probably see higher oil temps than me (mine almost never go above 210F) you would probably do better with something like the blend you mentioned. You definitely need to do an oil analysis at the end of the interval to see how it's holding up under your heavy right foot.

Good to see you're still alive and kicking!

David what do you think of your Holden Monaro (GTO)? Way back I owned the 1970 version (HG Monaro) with Canadian Saginaw 4 spd g'box, Salisbury 10-bolt diff, and 350 SBC. Theres a lot of history behind your vehicle including several Bathurst race wins and Australian Touring Car Chempionships. I sure wouldn't use M1 10W30 as they do here (factory fill) as it appears too thin and high consumption.

Idrinkmotoroil I run 7 qts so thats why I figured 2/5 ratio

HELLO patman

yep still around glad to see you are too, you need to take the GTO for a spin, its ahhh fun to so the least.

Sprintman I love the GTO has great balance, vey BMW M3 like but with a real motor:) easy to mod just a fun car but lots more refined as compared to my last LS1 car.

Well the next model will be designed here in Oz but built in the States unlike now. The 427 CI SBC from the Vette is expected to be availba in the GTS Commodore here so could end up in the new GTO. Pity Ford U.S suffers from the NIH syndrome unlike GM as the current Fords here are even better.

No GTO in Canada though, they won't bring it up here for some reason.

David,

If this engine allows for it, I would go with the Mobil 1 15w-50 versus the M1 0w-40. Keep in mind that the 0w-40 has plenty of viscosity improvers and the Redline does not. The Mobil 10w-30 and the 15w-50 have little if any VII.

You know M1 has a new version of it 15W50. They now have a Extended Performance 15W50 with more of all the goodstuff! It has more of the "Super Syn" base stock and beefier additive package. It might be worth considering. I am also sure you will be fine with your blend as well. I do not htink we have had a bad Redline/M1 blend show up yet!

so this is a good thing right?? not up on the oil stuff:) I was always looking for every little possable hp trick so I ran RP light weight race oil in my other cars picked up 12 hp on my 1LE with all the fluids switched over to RP. Never had any problems with any of my race cars running RP come to think of it and my last car was a EVO VIII with 400+ turbo charged hp that I ran the **** out of on road courses. Course I changed the oil every 2 to 3 thousands miles too.

State your source.

It may use very little, but the fact that it shears quickly to a thick 30, then thickens later from oxidation, tells me they use at least some VII. Keeping in mind too that VII today do not leave sludge behind like yester-years did. If it did, then Mobils 0W40 wouldn't have gotten an A3 rating.

Hiya David! I ran Mobil 1 15W-50 in my LS1 all last season including Indy '04, oil analysis showed great wear numbers well below Blackstone's universal averages.

I got the tip at Bondurant's school, where they use the same stuff in their C5 fleet.

I only run the thick stuff during the track season, off-season I use GC 0W-30 and my current fill has 6 oz Torco MPZ additive. I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone when I drop this fill in prep for Memphis '05.
