m1 5w50 + 5w30 havoline...

hi all

i've a quart of mobil1 5w-50 lying around here. if i mix this with 3 quarts of havoline 5w-30, what viscosity will i end up with? 5w-40?

is it ok if i even do it all? i mean, that extra quart's too expensive to just use in my lawnmow

Yes, no problem go ahead. I would suspect you'd be looking at a higher 30-weight.

thank you sir pitzel...i checked the link, guess i'll have to educate myself a little more as i;ve no idea what cST means (yet).

your suggestion that it's ok to mix is also a a relief, cause i already mixed it couple hours ago...hehe. seen some of the threads by the mixologists too, but not with this concoction.

i can't wait to put this into my honda after the summer. maybe i'll see some performance gains.

Hmm....lets look at this mathamatically...

1 qt of 5W-50 (mobil 1)
1 qt of 5W-30 (havoline)
1 qt of 5W-30 (havoline)
1 qt of 5W-30 (havoline)


Okay, all the oils are 5W so that wont change...3 x 30=90+50 divided by total quarts, 4, =35

so, "5W-35"

Havoline x 3 and Mobil1 x 1 = Havobil 1/4

So what you have is...

"Havobil 1/4 5W-35"!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other possible explanation would be the 5W's cancel, so you get "0". The three thirties take precedence over the 50, so you end up with:

"0W-30"

Wait...NOW THE SECRET CAN BE TOLD!!!!
