M1 210 bypass valve

I had the same question. I called the "filter hotline" on the Mobil 1 website, and was told it was in the base - they told me the same thing in an email...

"Hello,
The bypass valve for the Mobil One filters are on the backplate side of the filter as well. As a side note, the location of the bypass valve does not make a difference, it still does the same job of bypassing the media in case of pressure difference in the filter."

I did a lot of looking at M1 and various filters including the Mahle OC-54 used on my 85 911 for variety.

I concluded if I can see the dome inside the filter can with no springs and find something at the inlet to the filter (looks like a spring covered with rubber) THEN I believe bypass is in the base.

Different M1 filters had bypass in the base, others in the dome end.

For my application *Duratec 3.0l" only the Motorcraft FL820S meets this bypass in base criteria.

The Puralator (both reg. and Pure 1) do not, neither does the Napa GOLD (1372?) version which is the WIX 51372.

If you are wonder about Mahle, it had bypass in the base, not dome.
