This one is off of my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 4.7 liter. Some of you may remember advice I asked for when I first bought this truck used a couple years ago about which oils to use after I learned that these engines are prone to sludging. I bought the truck with 110,000 miles on it, and from the first oil change I did on it I used 5w30 synthetic, either PP or M1 except for this drain which was Synpower, the truck now has 160,000 miles on it. The oil filter is still a mess despite my efforts of cleaning it over the past 2 years. Its not the mayo type stuff due to the sad valve cover/ pcv/ oil fill design but more of a baked in......well sludge. I was a little hesitant to cut this one open (what I dont know cant hurt me lol), but am glad I did because my fears are now relieved for now.

This was a normal 5,000 OCI with 5w30 Synpower. I noticed only with this oil change it used a bit more then it usually does with PP or M1, almost a half quart compared to the 1/4 quart it usually does. I topped off 800 miles from change time with MMO, and within 250 miles that burned or evaporated off. I will keep an eye and make mental notes on consumption from here on out though, I dont know if it may have just been the Synpower change or what.

The sparklies in the can in pic 3 is the shavings from cutting the can open halfway with a hacksaw as this is a really thick canister and my dremel died halfway.

These pics are of a blot test I did of this oil a couple days ago. I dont know squat about the test or how to read the blot, but decided to do it for fun.

Keep up the good work. If it were me, I'd use the M1 oil filters for 2 OCIs. 10k miles on a filter rated for 15k sounds like a winner.

I may work on that. To me the filter looks like it has at least 1 more oci in it. It barely looks used. I don't know that I can do an oil change and not change the filter without the nagging feeling that I did the job opposite of full slow.

Thanx for posting!

Looks good. I have a feeling the K&N I have downstairs to cut open one of these days is going to look barely used as well. I just can't seem to come to terms with leaving a filter on and just changing the oil, yet. I know it isn't going to hurt anything just don't like it, plus then I have to wait longer to cut one open! So the more expensive, higher capacity filters don't really make sense for me I guess.

This is my dilemma as well.

Vikas, I do get metal shavings, as referenced in my original post. But I know what they are from.
