Assuming your car can take 10w30 and you live in a relatively pretty warm climate, would you get a better oil for less by going for the 0w40? I do know about the jugs vs. quart bottles issue when comparing these oils but lets just go with the assumption that M1 EP is more then M1 since Advance had oil change specials with them where the EP was $2 more.

M1 0w40 Stats
Viscocity: 78.30 cSt@40C 14.00 cSt@100C
VI: 186.09
HT/HS: 3.70

M1 10w30 EP Stats
Viscocity: 66.10 cSt@40C 10.70 cSt@100C
VI: 152.81
HT/HS: 3.10

While you might think that M1 0w40's 40C cSt is high, M1 HM 10w30 has a 40C viscocity of 78.20 cSt

If your car can take 10w-30, I don't see that there's much to gain by going to an xw-40, even if it's a good one. I'd stick with the 10w-30.

but it's on the 10w30 to be better than the 0w40 since it costs more. does it fit the bill?

Wouldn't the 0W-40 give easier starting in the cold?

Is your question hypothetical, or for you?

If it's for you, the 10W-30 is a much better choice for the cars you drive.

You said this...."M1 HM 10w30 has a 40C viscocity of 78.20 cSt".

But that's what you have listed for the 0W-40..???

Yes. The OP said he was assuming a warm climate, so that's what I was going on. Otherwise, it might be a tougher call.

Right. And the M1 10W30 is listed as 66.10 cSt@40C. OK, I got it now, you just made a mistake :)

Do you need the mid HTHS A3 B3/B4? The add pack % is better on the euro oils, I would do the 10w-30 HM - mid hths, lower running viscosity, 80% PAO basestock (-65f pour). Only on paper - never ran it in anything. You have to run it and see. If 5-6K OCI why not the rotella T5?

Not a mistake on my part but a lack of reading comprehension on yours. M1 HM is not the same as M1

I'm running the T5 right now. As for OCIs, can M1 0w40 stretch as far or farther than M1 EP 10w30 when pushed? I should look for some TBN specs and see if I can find some 15k OCIs of these oils

Viscosity specs seem to justify using 0w40 in a car that specs 5w30 and 10w30

OOps, I see that now, MY mistake :)

too many numbers for a morning anyways haha

so what do you think? better oil for the money going with the 0w40 given the way the advance auto m1 oil change specials are going?

0w-40 Sl A3B3B4 - Thats mobils best PCMO - if you want a heavy synthetic. I think its too heavy for most low hths healthy engines. Is your engine a bit clattery when warm? Still, 40 wt is 40wt. 13-14 cst is not 10-11 cst and the oil will be thicker through warmup. Try it and see how it runs, if its too thick you can save the fill buy dumping ~ .5litre and replacing that with M1 0w-20.
