New report, this time with M1 0w-40, no filter change, winter. I'll try to get a report on the next one but it will probably be well below 5k miles as my last free oil change at dealer is due in July, may not be worth it.

Old thread for first report is HERE

BLACKSTONE COMMENT: No complaints here. It was a rough winter, but your BMW pulled through with flying colors.

Most metals have held steady or improved.

The only exception was iron, but an increase of 3 ppm is hardly anything to worry about.

It's still far below universal averages, so your engine is wearing much better than most of its kind.

There were no odd finds for the oil, physically -- no fuel, coolant, dirt, or moisture was detected.

The viscosity was good, and the TBN at 5.6 showed plenty of active additive left.

Try 7,500 miles next fill. Nice engine!

I'd say the M1 is working better than the BMW HP stuff pretty much across the board. I think a 7500 mile interval is worth a shot -- also, pay for TAN next time.

I'm curious, how much value would the addition of TAN add with a 5K mile interval and a current TBN of 5.6?

Probably not much. Doing UOAs at 5K miles with quality synthetic is typically a waste of money, unless you have some unusual driving pattern that takes you 2 years to reach those 5K miles or you're looking for something specific like coolant or fuel contamination.

But i think dparm was suggesting extending the OCI, in which case the rising TAN may come into play.

Bingo

I'm doing 7500mi next. I just wanted a comparison of BMW and M1 at around 5k.

Forgot to mention, I did have my oil sample condemned by the lab once in as little as 6K miles due to TAN already exceeding TBN. This happened because the oil was in service for 16 months which included 2 winters.

I'll be going ~7500mi on the last free BMW fill in July so probably won't have another sample until January, which is when I will put M1 0w-40 in again. I'll get TAN on both to see how they look. Should have the M1 fill results next August roughly.
