I have read that a direct injection turbocharged engine should use oil with low noack. I am getting a new Ford Ranger with turbo and direct injection. Can somebody tell me if the Motorcraft full synthetic 5w30 would qualify as low noack? Thanks.

No.
Low-SAPS Euro oils, that carry MB229.51, MB229.52 are ones that have for sure Noack below 10% as MB 229.5X approvals require Noack at or below 10%.

According to ford, it meets Dexos standards. But, needless to say, Ford isn’t going to get a Dexos license from GM. Nor will they pay GM a licensing fee.

The motorcraft product is very similar formulation to the P66 Shield Valor 5w30 as well.

So it will be >13%

But it will not be as low as Redline or HPL.

I’m planning on running Redline Euro 5w30 in mine. Or HPL… but I have to pay for HPL. And redline is free for me.

That seems like a no-brainer as the euro 5W-30 Red Line is 5% NOACK
and you don’t have to pay for it !?
Does anyone have a clue what a comparable HPL 5W-30 NOACK is? Seems to be impossible to find.

3.4 would be the NOACK for HPL 5W-30

Wow , that was the oil I use to use till they priced themself out of my market. When I go back to buying oil, HPL allows a large 5 gallon purchase and it gets the price down to $14 a qt where Redline 5w-30 Euro is $17 no matter how much you buy. I can stomach $14 a Qt but $17 you sit on your overpriced oil Redline. Have a talk with those boys at Redline on individual buyer discount on say a 5 gallon purchase to get their over priced oil down to a price that someone who isn't making 6 figures can afford.

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 has a Noack of 8.2%, which is probably as low as it gets for a non-boutique 5W-30. It's got really good cold flow properties for a 5W as well. It's currently on sale at Canadian Tire.

Yeah, RedLine isn’t cheap, but you have to find the deals such as buy it by the case at Bimmerworld at 10-15% off (watch the deals) and then meet their free shipping minimum. That’s the way to do it.

that 3.4 NOACK was for a 10w20.
not 5W30

10W-20 or 5W-30 from HPL, I will bet 1 million Bucks that both of these oil's from HPL would have the same NOACK.

I have in my hand now a sheet from Redline Oil with their best oils, I will list the Noack's for all of these oil's.

0W-20 is 9
0W-30 is 9
0W-40 is 9
5W-20 is 8
5W-30 is 6

The rest of the thicker oils from Redline have the same NOACK Number.

You did say that Redline is not cheap, it is expensive, but for members on this Forum, HPL with the 15% discount is not only cheaper but it is a better Oil.

I would agree, although some here do not agree with your statement. Direct injection engine suffer from coking of valves directly from EGR systems. If an oil turns to vapor more, than the effect has to be more, is how I think of it. Again, some on here would disagree, with the "cite your sources" BS, but still it stands.
but I have to pay for HPL. And redline is free for me.
if I could get Redline for free, I would not consider anything else. For me that would include Supertech aswell.

Those are older values.

That’s because Noack isn’t a very repeatable or reliable test (which may be why some poorly crafted oils like reporting Noack results). HPL uses thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) which is not directly translatable to equivalent Noack results, but it is more consistent and repeatable. HPL puts up very low numbers on TGA.

It’s still a pass for me. Sure, it makes sense if one gets it gratis, but if one has to pay for it we’ve seen plenty of information (specs, approvals, and some insider info) that since P66 took over, it is most definitely not the same company or quality that everyone tends to attribute to the RL name. Just like the Royal Purple/Calumet fiasco…

It doesn't matter, Redline "I guarantee you" will NEVER lower the price or sell a 5 gallon pail of that oil at $14 QT to "sell" their oil to more people. I will be buying HPL for sure because they get it. And we know it is better oil too. Redline is no longer worth my money.

Nothing has changed other than RL's location, and now more access to P66's testing facilities. They're also more on top of PDS. Foxtrot mentioned this before too. You can access their PDS very easily.

Many believe VII’s used in an oil may contribute equally (if not more) to intake valve deposits as does a higher NOACK . Therefore in a DI engine I subscribe to keeping your OCI’s on the lower side in mixed driving conditions (3,500 to 4,000 miles / 6 months).
