Ok, this topic is more for fun, not about any technical info
or oil related questions. You all have seen by now the
new 5qt jug that Pennzoil and QS have. Well, take a large funnel after you empty that jug and try pouring used motor oil into it. OMG!!!LOL it's terrible. When I poured the used oil into the funnel, it barely flowed through it, and when it did flow, the air from the jug would belch through the funnel and make oil splash out all over the [censored] place... Just me, or anyone else have this experience?

I feel your pain bro!

I don't...but my buddy uses striclty M1 so I have a nice stash of empty M1 5qt jugs...those are PERFECT for oil disposal and the oil pours right through the funnel into the jug, and they empty even quicker. Pennzoil is GREAT oil, but that new container is terrble both for pouring and used oil disposal.

I just use one of those 16qt used oil catches. Cost ten bucks. Real easy to use, provided you rember to open up the breather before you start draining the oil.

I would like to think that they could have used my help, I would have hoped to do a little more (consumer) research before settling on that bad bottle design. I am a packaging engineer for consumer goods mostly focused on blow molded bottles, I would have hoped that I would have thought about end uses a little better. Factor in that one of the main reasons (behind convenience of a 1 bottle oil change) people buy the 5 qt. jugs is so they can take their used oil back in the same bottle.

It's these types of things that are making packaging more and more important and difficult to design as consumers, like you in this case, are more and more demanding of the plastic container they'll ultimately recycle or landfill. Throw in the price of oil and, well you know that deal...

Does Pennzoil need better packaging R&D or did they just outsource this to a bottle supplier (I think Graham Packaging makes this bottle) and do the old "yep, it looks cool, it'll work"???

badbrad358,
I agree with that...[censored]...I just wish every brand would just copy M1's bottle design. Mobil has the best design, easy to pour and easy to put used oil back in.

Everyone that uses Pennzoil should send an email to Shell and tell them the jug stinks. Tell them if they don't come up with a better product that you will quit using their products. Maybe if they got a few thousand emails like that they would rethink what they did. Tomorrow I'm going out to try and find one of these jugs. If it's as bad as you say it is I will sure let them know. As for as Mobil 1, I personally think that they have the best looking quart bottle out there. I think the worst looking quart bottle is Valvoline.

Someone post some pics of this "new" bottle. New compared to old photos would help too!

Does that mean you are actually going to step into a Wal*mart

Yes... only Walmart are selling the 5qt jug...

Oh, I first thought we were talking about 1-gallon jugs. They just changed the 5-quart jugs? Oh well, I will still force myself to enter where I do not like to go.

I've never seen these before, but they look even more cool:

I use to work at a leading auto parts supplier. Those Havoline bottles always leak on the shelf, and during shipping. It was a rare day indeed when we got a supply of havoline products that hadn't leaked their contents over the entire box. We rarely sold any havoline, and this is partly due to the grungy look most of the bottles had after bathing in oil for weeks on end.

Also, the Castrol bottles never stacked very well. I never understood why we sold so much Castrol; the bottles are downright ugly compared to some other brands. Not to mention they lack functionality. However they had a great marketing campaign and Castrol was always on special.

My favorite bottles are Pennzoil, M1, and Superflow. They are easy to handle, stack well, and feel nice in the hand. You wouldn't think the feel of a bottle mattered, until you were restocking hundreds at a time. Being a low level manager, I never thought you send a letter to the any of the producers whose bottle's I did not like. In hindsight, that was a mistake.

Why go through all that trouble? Why not just use a 5 gallon bucket for the used oil? That's what I do and keep the matching snap lid on it for storage. When it comes time to dispose of the used oil, I just take the 5 gallon bucket over to Wal-Mart and pour it into their tank. Piece-a-cake.
