The 2000 Ford Taurus (Vulcan V6) is currently filled with green coolant. I'd like to drain and refill but upon checking Walmart last night the only option that I found that might work was Preston "all makes / all models".

Is that the old school green coolant? I don't want to mix and cause issues. Other than that all I found was Dexcool and asian vehicle options.

I used to get it from Auto Zone for my Jeep.

But last summer I ran like 15+ gallons of distilled water through it and got it all flushed out then filled it with G-05.

Just because the coolant is green doesn’t mean it’s an IAT chemistry. I would use Prestone all makes all models with confidence in this application.
it’s been more than likely been mixed. dexclones flooded the market in the early 2000s and rapidly became the default option

mixing coolants rarely causes big issues

Thanks for the input guys. If we end up getting it tomorrow I'll swing by Napa at some point.

greg24, here's a very recent thread with all the choices: https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/t...olant-for-older-vehicles.340535/#post-5753855

I missed your other threads about this Taurus. If memory serves, they had a common problem of heater cores plugging due to fine rust particulate and tiny passages. There's dozens of YouTube videos showing a simple diy flush procedure. Not a deal breaker in my opinion. My daughter had one of these years ago and it was a good car.

Thanks! Coolant looks good honestly but I'm not sure if that is an indicator if rust is present or not. I figured after reading about the Vulcan and rust concerns that it would be a good idea to drain and fill the radiator anyway.

Sorry I'm late chiming in. Prestone yellow bottle (light green fluid) is my go-to for my Ford vehicles.

Peak 10x and Supertech Universal will also mix in just fine (darker green) if the rebates are good or if Prestone is sold out.

For model year 2003 and newer, you need would need Motorcraft Gold or Zerex G-05

I’ve used the Prestone 3 year, then Prestone 5 year, changing at those intervals, and finally sent my 2000 Taurus to the wreckers due to structural rust with the original water pump and rad in good shape after 150,000 miles. I plan to use the Prestone 10 year in my 2005 Taurus.

I didn’t see either of those products. Just Prestone “all makes”. I don’t like any universal type product.
How did the 2000 Taurus treat you? Any transmission issues? Seems the internet is flooded with complaints.

If you want, according to the Ford coolant chart
If you drain/flush all the green out, you can refill with Gold (G-05) and observe it's longer service life
That iron out flush (VC-9) should clean it up pretty well
Might as well chuck a new thermostat in, it's dead easy on the Vulcan
Check the degas bottle cap, if it's the old style (white plastic label), chuck it and upgrade to the newer less failure prone silkscreened printed cap
I went through this all on my Vulcan at least once
Use Motorcraft parts, they're stupid cheap and work properly the first time
