Never did I realize there are so many who are passionate about motor oil. Many of the threads here are very intersting and contain information that I I did not even realize existed for motor oil.

1-Just curious as to how many miles you have on your vehicle and type of vehicle?

2-Your average oil change interval?

3-Type and brand of oil?

4-Any type of major engine work ever performed?

Myself:

1- 114,000 miles - 2001 Honda Civic LX 5 speed

2- I try for 4000 mile intervals have gone up to 5000+ miles on a few occasions.

3- Conventional 5W-20 ,Texaco Havoline , Motorcraft , Castrol GTX and once used Valvoline.

4- Engine runs as good as it ever has. Only performed the 110,000 manitenance - basically the timing belt change.

2005 Subaru Outback-less than 1000 miles on it. It will get 5K OCI's until it's out of warranty, then 8-10K OCI's with Amsoil.

1996 Jeep Cherokee. Currently has 140K miles on it. 4-5K mile OCI's until it was out of warranty, now 8-10K mile OCI's with Amsoil 10W40. Never any major work done, just normal maintenance.

1992 Nissan 300ZX. 127K miles (purchased with 100K on it) currently undergoing an AutoRX cleaning to make sure it's clean. Never any major work done according to the previous owner other than maintenance. Previous owner stated that he had changed the oil every 3K with Trop Artic. I will use Amsoil 10W30 once the AutoRX cleaning is finished.

1987 Nissan Sentra with 104K miles. Never any major work, however it was sorely neglected from 30K miles until 94K miles. Just replaced O2 sensor and did and AutoRX cleaning and it runs perfect.

1998 Ford Ranger - I bought my truck 2 years ago with 40K on the clock. ARX treatment around 45K miles. 72K currently about to turn 73K and runs like a champ. Been using synthetic oil all along such as M1, Amsoil, GC and pretty soon back to M1. All with 7-8K mile OCI's. Major work was to rebuilt the tranny and install new clutch packs due to an accident. For the last 32K, it's been routine maintence and BITOG maintence

Recently installed a K&N FIPK as well.

1997 Honda Shadow Spirit VT1100(motorcycle) 7400 miles, BITOG maintence, keeping it clean. Currently using M1 MX4T 10w40 with LC and recently changed to a WIX filter from a STP. No major work done to it as far as mechanicals,,,,,,AR

'91 Honda Civic
216,500+ miles
Mostly Castrol GTX 10w30, but sometimes Mobil 1 10w30
3000 mile oil changes until about 100k then 5000 mile intervals.
Occasionally I used a moly additive.
Hundreds upon hundreds of sub-freezing cold starts.
Engine still ran great when I gave the car away, but the body was crap.

1) 1995 VW Jetta GLX (VR6) 281,000 miles
2) 10,000 mile OCI
3) Mobil 1 10W-30, then switching to M1 0W-40
4) No major engine work, only a fuel pump and water pump replacement.

1984 Accord 320,000K KM; average 5-6K KM OCI using any API certified oil. Increased OCI to 8K KM recently. No major engine work.

1989 Volvo 745T 206,000K KM; average 8K KM OCI (previous owner) now down to 6month OCI due to short trips. Castrol GTX 10w30. No oil/wear related engine work.

I have a '94 Ford Taurus GL, 182 cubic inch Vulcan V6, with just under 68,000 miles. My OCIs run about 2,500 to 3,000 miles, and I use Pennzoil or Havoline 5W/30 year round, with Motorcraft or Purolator filters. No major engine work has ever been necessary. Of course, as little as I drive, this car ought to last me until retirement!

I have driven two cars past 250,000 miles. I used Castrol GTX mostly 20w-50 at 3000 miles. The Mercedes 300d 1980 was still going when sold at 265,000. The Toyota Cressida 1988 made it to 260,000 and died from a head gasket leak so was sold running but overheating. No engine work was ever done on either car.
What I have learned is the engine oil makes a difference in oil consumption/ring wear. Both engines above burned too much oil. Mobil 1
10w-30 is what I would use today and 6000-10000 mile intervals. The cooling system is the weak link in making an engine last. It is overheating that will kill your high milage engine. A new radiator/water pump and hoses at 200,000 I feel is necessary. Also the transmission fluid has to be changed at frequent intervals ie minimum of 30,000 miles with an automatic. This is my 2cents worth.
I have a Honda accord with 123,000 using the Mobil 1 with no work at this point.

I have a 1996 Toyota Avalon, bought new. Now has 172,000+ miles. OCI of 4-5000 miles with Castrol 5W30 and Toyota filters 1st 150,000 mi, Pennzoil and Fram filters since. Don't know if it uses oil or not. I don't check it, just change it. Interesting thing about this car, I have never had the brakes worked on. Front rotors are a little wavey because some neanderthal at the tire shop was too enthusiastic with the air wrench on the second set of replacement tires. My mechanics keep telling me I have pad life left. I am using the expertise on this board to set up OCI's for my next Toyota and younger son's Toyota Highlander. Older son doesn't have time to stop and get regular changes. His cars never last 100k anyway.

Lets see these are not in order (obviously)

I had a '91 Escort GT that still ran great when sold with 196,000 miles in '96. No mechanical work other than maintenance, A/C clutch, and a heater core. Mobil 1 10W30 every 5K - lots of miles towing a trailer with 2 street bikes.

an '89 grand voyager w/ 3.0 V6 and ultradrive.
In 278,000 miles had the heads redone due to leaky valve guide seals at about 100K, transmission rebuilt at 200K, retired at 278K becuase everything else wore out - still ran good. quick lube every 5-10K - lots of highway miles towing the same trailer

'00 Toyota Tundra sold w/ just over 200K. no mechanical work except for a fan clutch, spider gears in the rear end, cracked exhaust manifold, MAF sensor. Changed timing belt, serpentine belt and water pump at 140K. looked and drove like new when sold. Lot's of highway miles towing a larger trailer through the mountains of NC/TN. Mobil1 10w30, or 15w50 depending on time of year. changed oil about every 10K.

'87 Ford Aerostar 3.0 v6. 137K miles. lots of work, lifetime transmission rebuild at aamco at 40K miles, and many times thereafter. Always leaked oil from valve cover gaskets. Blew head gasket at 70K due to stuck thermostat?. had professionally rebuilt. A/C did not work most of it's life. at 137K we went out one morning and transmission oil was running out from under the van - we left it sitting there for about a year before having it hauled away. Changed the filter about every 10K added 1 quart of oil every other fillup.

'84 dodge caravan w/ 4 cylinder and 3 speed auto. required little maintenance - threw a rod on the highway with over 300K on the odometer. transmission was never opened. Quick lube every 3K (the thing was at about 4,000rpm at 80 mph)

'91 ford aerostar 4.0 v6 AWD. very reliable up to the 100k mark. always leaked oil. sold it at 105K Quick lube every 3K

2005 Chevy Uplander LT: Just dumped the factory fill today.Replaced with Mobil 1 5W30 and AC Delco PF52 filter. Will go strictly by the oil life monitor for OCI.

1996 Chevy Blazer: Currently has Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic 5W30 (thanks BITOG and Auto Zone for the $2 clearance Maxlife synthetic).AC Delco PF52 filter.OCI is every 6 months. It doesn't get driven much anymore, maybe 150-200 miles a month. The first 80,000 miles on this vehicle was almost exclusively Valvoline All Climate 5W30 with a few fills of Valvoline Durablend 5W30.Doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil at 83,000.A couple years ago it started leaking oil but it was an oil cooler line that had developed a small hole.
