Lock nut type?

Bit off topic, but I love the details and knowledge of BITOG...

I am attaching my new TV to a wall mount. I used the four bolts that were in the TV to attach the wall mount to the TV. Someone mentioned using a lock nut washer. The wall mount came with about 5 different screw types for different types of TV's and their variations (in addition to directions written by 5 year old).

So should I use the star type of washer Example or the washer with the split in it ( Example ). Which would be more effective?

I often wondered what those washers were used for.

I too vote split. And get nuts with nylon bits on them if you have to go get hardware anyhow. Not much chance of those wiggling off once you tighten them down.
