Been buying Mobil 1 (Pep Boy buy 3 get 3 free). For my sons Ford Focos Zetec DOHC which factory requirement is 5W-20, should I load up on the remaining Mobil 1 0W-20 or wait for the new Mobil 1 5W-20? Thanks

I was informed that the HT/HS of the M1 0W-20 is at SAE minimum and this has been corrected with the new M1 5W-20. Accelerated wear "could" be a problem.

I personally could care less what the HT/HS of the 0W-20 is because it has proven itself to me in the Ford engines I maintain. I bought a lot of the 0W-20 because I could get them on sale. SALE - next best thing to FREE.

I called the local pep boys and they don't know of this buy 3 get 3.

If that woul dhave been true in my area, I would have bought 30 cases.

You need to purchase the MADD calendar for $1.00 at Pep Boys. In the calendar is a coupon for "Buy 3, Get 3 Free" on Mobil 1. There is no limit to how many calendars you can buy, and the coupons don't expire until the end of 2005.

I saw some on the clearance cart at Wal-Mart but I had them check the price and it was still $4.77, so I put it back. Haven't seen any more either. What the heck, I'll save $5 and buy jugs of M1 5w-30 to put in the Taurus. That's what's in it now.

I'm doing the same thing for my Honda. I bought 4 cases total. I have toyed with the idea of adding one quart of M1 5W-30 EP with each change. I plan on running 8,000 mile intervals.

I have some calendars left. 5 maximum per poster Total price for 5 mailed is $6.00 Let me know

Includes Buy 3 get 3 free Mobil 1
12 oz Techron
18oz Eagle One Wax
20 oz RainX Car Wash
numerous other less valuable coupons

I came across 40qts of M1 0w-20 SL but they wanted $5.29 per quart. I'm thinking of asking the store manager if that is right. If they lower it, I might buy the whole stock.

While 0w-20 SL is an great choice, I feel that the new 5w-20 SM formula is a notch better. The pour point differences are only about 6°F, still down in the -50°F range and you get a more advanced and fuel efficient add-pack.

While you can't lose with either oil, I feel the new 5w-20 is worth choosing over the older 0w-20 formula. This isn't GC, it's M1!

I'm just not sold though on the SM G-4 synthetics. Additives have been reduced and while the conventional oils have improved, I think the synthetics have been weakend, hence the two Mobil 1's that now exist.

I have to agree with Buster. I've always been a fan of Mobil 1 but I feel the latest SM version is a step backwards because of the reasons Buster cited. In fact I think each itineration of M1 (except possibly Tri-Syn to SS) was a step backwards. As Mobil stopped claiming extended drain capability their engineers were able to
make a less robust product. I believe this was done to meet a price point as well as the stricter
EPA requirements which called for less phosphorous etc... It is for these reasons that I feel the Advanced Formula Mobil 1 of SH or even SJ variety was the best Mobil 1. Any thoughts?

Heh Buster,

When I said the same thing a few months ago you kind of bashed me around a bit and told me I was wrong.

These days, Id buy Pennzoil Platinum over traditional M1.

Of course I did stock up on the old M1 SL OW-20 so I should be good for awhile.

Oh Well............. Times and People Change.

Happy Motoring All,

I'm moving away from M1 for many reasons. I'm using up my stash of 0W20 by mixing 1 qt with 4 qts of Mobil 5000 5W30 (80/20). After my stash is gone I'm going to Havoline.

Buster, didn't Terry say some time ago that the SL-basedadd packs (paraphrasing here) substantially "out of date" and that the SM add's are the direction the industry needs to go (and should have gone for some time)? I figure if anyone in the industry has his finger on the pulse of what's going on, it's Terry.

In regards to the SM formulas, I'm thinking that there's alot more we don't see in VOA/UOA's than what we do. It looks weak compared to SL spec's, but in reality is an arguably more robust formulation.

Besides, just yesterday I hit 29.25MPG on my Saturn Vue with the Honda 3.5L V6, mix of SM M1 5w-20/5w-30.

Now that M1 SM formula has proved itself to me, what am I going to do with all the M1 0w-20 I have on hand?

SM is clearly a step forward for Dinos bc they are using better baseoils, but for synthetics that are/were PAO based, it's simply an additive reduction from what I've seen. If SM was an improvment for full synthetics, their wouldn't be a need for M1 EP. That was my point.

I'm all for low viscosity fuel efficient oils as long as they are robust and loaded with additives. Low viscosity is one thing, but lower ZDDP is another. Both are being lowered so more expensive, newer replacement additives are being introduced.

I wouln't bother unless you are TRULY going to do extended oci (e.g. 10,000 miles). Having said this,I did purchase from Canadian tire 7 (6 litres per case) cases of Mobil 1 0w20 oil. I feel that the Mobil 1 "0w20" is a better oil for anyone who lives in a "very" cold climate (-30 celcius) regardless whether they plan on extending their oci or not. You live in California so I wouldn't bother.
