Without jack stands, you're relying on a 10 cent hydraulic seal to prevent the car from crashing down on top of your head.

The jackstands are not meant to support the car indefinitely once it's lifted. The jack's only purpose is to temporarily lift the car. Also, the jackstands won't bleed down like a jack can. I'd hate to be under a car when the jack starts lowering. Proper lifting is using the jack to raise the car up, then lower it down onto the jackstands. The jackstands are MUCH SAFER than a jack. If you don't have jackstands, run out and get a pair. Your friends/family will thank you not having to pay for a premature funeral when the jack fails with you under the car.

I'll give coolbreeze some credit for asking. Myself, I prop the car on short lengths of logs, with another one thrown under the car for good measure.

I leave the jack under the end of the car I'm working on in ADDITION to the jack stands. If I can do what I want to do with it under there. Just in case there's an earthquake.

Have someone who knows what they are doing, show you how, if not sure, dont get under there!

And if it's up on ramps, I keep a jackstand under it, just in case the ramp fails...seriously...this is your life we're talking about...

safety. jacks can fail suddenly. Also it is much more stable on stands for when your leaning, pushing, pulling or whatever on the car.

Nope. I've been doing it this way for 37 years. I think it's a safer setup that jackstands, which have a smaller footprint.
