I have a chevy impala with the 3.4 in it and the other day the valve lifter started to tick quite LOUDLY after a few miles it stopped, and it happens only when the engine is cold, I know its leaking down and takes it a while to pump back up, The chevy dealer is telling me that on certain engines this cant be fixed and this is one of those motors, anybody know if this is true,or had this problem and had it fixed-- Thanks

If it is a leak down issue with the lifter the solution is simple replace the lifters! They will pull the "classic" GM responce wich is that it is not a "longterm durability" issue and they will send you packing more then likely! Assumeing that the pump,bypass,adbv are all in good working order and no sludge is present in the engine I would say you have some bad lifters!
i had the 3.4 in my '94 pont gtp.same noise for up to 12 mins.cold..g.m.does have sorta a fix.(didn't work on mine).the kit includes cam plug allan set screws..to plug up two holes in each cam.see the cams are hollow and the oil flow is directed to fill the four cams first..g.m. replaced my eng. @22k..i tried different weight

Is it happening only at startup or is it driving in general? I have that same 3.4 in my Grand Am, and it ticks only on startup. I'm thinking it might be a faulty ADBV on my oil filter (M1)
. I'm going to try a different filter to see if that changes it, if not well then looks like we are in the same boat with noisy lifters
