I had a 2000 TJ 4.0 liter that was dead silent on PP 5W30 with Purolator or Wix filters. I also have a company Cherokee with the same engine that has a constant tick using bulk oil and a Hastings filter. Sounds like a lifter to me. Don't believe the ticking will ever quit but I also don't believe it's going to hurt anything either.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you have to time the cam position sensor (the big distributor looking thing).
My FSM is a 99 ..but the on line data that I could find states that it's either in or 180 out ..which could make sense ..except that I can't see them using the economy of the old distributor/oil pump drive location ..and not leaving the same gear drives on the cam/shaft.

I have some ticking noice too, but sometimes I think it is something outside of the block, like fuel pump or something. Goes away quickly and is not always present at startup. Strange. it is a 02 at 60k miles
