Lexus Toyota "Lifetime ATF" - baloney

One thing that's important to remember is that Toyota has never actually said don't change the fluid. They say "under normal driving, fluid change is not necessary". That's different than "never change it".

If you operate your vehicle under "severe duty" situations...heavy towing, hauling, short-tripping, stop-and-go.....or you've purchased a used vehicle whose service history is tough to determine....then I think it's prudent to service the transmission.

When I bought the Yaris 3 years ago for my daughter the 1st thing I did was change the oil. The 2nd thing....service the transmission.

Bingo. You said it right here. My 2017 Toyota RAV4 warranty and maintenance manual which broadly covers most Toyota's gives a 60,000 mile change interval for driving while towing, using a car-top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading. The maintenance schedule stops at 120,000 miles/144 months. I would say that is a good indication that Toyota considers life of vehicle is sometime after that.
 
The stick is deceiving as I've never seen it represent the goop sitting in the pan that used to be your transmission.

I remember an old salt mechanic that worked on my 76 fury that started slipping telling me he wanted to drop that pan, and I not wanting to pay for rack time or a new gasket asked him why and he said I want to see how much of your transmission is "in" the pan.

I was surprised when I saw what was really in there.
 
There's 125k miles on the 2010 Tacoma in our work fleet. Original fluid, still shifts fine. The maintenance schedule only says to "inspect fluid". So far it's not black, so it hasn't been changed yet (not ideal). The 2013 Silverado got a drain and fill at about 110k because the pan gasket started leaking.

The 2005 Silverado went 192k on the original fluid before i became the owner and immediately did a complete flush. The fluid was dark, but nothing scary. I wish it had been done sooner because I want to run it 400k miles plus and I'm sure at some point the 4L60E will fail.

The Toyota probably won't get a fluid changes until close to 200k miles also, fingers crossed it holds up.
 
changed the tranny fluid on my 2016 Avalon when I bought it used this summer with exactly 50,000 miles on it. Fluid was practically black. Scared me enough to remove the pan and take a look around, but everything seemed good. Changed the filter and gasket...been shifting fine (although it was shifting fine when I bought it too).

I’ll probably do simple drain and fills once a year or every other year, going forward. Getting the pan off was a pan on one side. But I hate how quickly the WS fluid turns dark.
 
To me, the "lifetime" of any fluid should not exceed whatever duration the powertrain warranty was from the factory.

If it had a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, but "lifetime" gear oil, I would change the gear oil on that interval.
 
I'm of two minds on this. Our 2010 Sienna has over 220k on the original fluid and still shifts well, just as when we bought it at 12k. Dipstick inspections show that it looks to be in decent shape - not burned or discolored. I'm not too concerned about it considering how well it shifts.
But I did change the 2012 Camry's fluid out at 60k just for peace of mind; I had a hard time finding a place that even wanted to or was willing to do it, but ended up finding a Toyota dealer that did an exchange for $180 or so. Did that make me feel better? Yeah, but for most people, the lifetime service is probably fine. Can it possibly be problematic? Sure, but many people run fluid for the life of the car with no issue.
This is pretty indicative of what I see from toyota/aisin transmissions. I personally don't feel comfortable leaving fluid in that long but I personally know of 3 2010 Camrys that my family and friends drive, all 200-220k miles and all on the factory fluid shifting just fine. I'm not entirely sure how other manufacturers stack up in that regard but if you're getting 200k miles and still shifting good on factory fluid there's not much to complain about. I'd still change it regularly for the peace of mind though.
 
Good to do a drain periodically (blood donation). My next donation is on Dec 31.

I do “Trans-Fusion” on my Burb once a year. I can pull 4 quarts out of 12 with a 3/8 inch plastic tube. I still plan a pan drop and filter change and magnet cleaning which will be the third one for the trans ( presently with 211,000 miles on it).

I said it many times before - their lifetime warranty means - car warranty duration, be it 5 years or 100K miles or whatever and whichever comes first, that's all.
Well...someone posted that GM considers "lifetime" 150,000 miles....well out of their warranty so that says you are wrong.

The "Lifetime" is defined by some Asian countries rules of max mileage usage.
In other words, after a certain mileage, the car has to be thrown away and in most cases it is around 60K miles or 100K km.

That is their "lifetime".
In the US, when you go to Youtube, there are Lexus and Toyota that is used to 1 million mile or more.
So, I don't think the Lifetime Trans fluid work to 1 million miles. LOL!!!
