Yes I saw that the other guys were receiving the prize for the blue LED in the news. Seems like some of the awards in life are not always for the most worthy recipients.

Other factors certainly come into play.

Most awards go to IP thieves, like Einstein. Here is a case of Mr Prasher, a textbook case. None of the buggers who received the Prize for his work offered a penny to him, and he was destitute then. He was driving a shuttle van, depleted his life savings, lost his house, etc. Pure science can be very dirty. Decent folks are few there
 
I just did some quick web searching, and it seems like Holonyak may have invented the first visible light LED, but there appears to have been infrared LEDs decades earlier... They are all bandgap devices. The blue one sounds like more of an engineering feat, actually, since it had been a holy grail for so long.
