The 95 and older Ford 4.6 V8s had the valve seal problem. I had a 96 Merc with the 4.6,(96 is when Ford changed the design) and it never showed smoke on start up, even with 218K.

They get damaged when you remove them because it's impossible to pull them without prying and damaging them as the ridge inside the cup is locked into the bottom of the valve-guide crown. I wish I had kept them and taken a picture to compare how the lips looked like. Perhaps I didn't throw them all. I will check in the garage.
