Leaking PS pump cover in 02 Accord

It's leaking exactly like in the picture below that I found online. I found a TSB for 5th gen Accords with this same problem and the remedy was to replace the pump cover seal. The TSB calls for removing the pump off the car but is this necessary? Can't I just remove the 4 flange bolts and swap out the seal?

I also have a leak where the return hose meets the cooler line below the reservoir so I'm also going to take care of that. Interestingly, the pump isn't noisy and the fluid isn't foamy. I guess the pump hasn't started sucking in air...yet.

I had a 3G Accord for many years. I purchased a seal kit from Rock Auto. You do need to remove the pump because installing the seals requires considerable disassembly of the pump. It is not difficult, though, and worth the effort. The seals are all very specific types of o-rings and you'll have a leak-free pump when you're done. You will be amazed at the wonderful close tolerances inside the pump - like a fine Swiss watch.

I understand but at this time, I'd just like to replace the leaking pump cover seal. The job seems as easy as zipping off the 4 flange bolts, removing the pump cover, swapping seals and re-tightening everything. I don't have a reason to suspect the rest of the pump's leaking so there isn't a need to open up everything to replace all the seals.

Close clearances.

You want service bulletin 98-023 dated Mar 9, 1998. The fix is to replace the o-ring between the pump housing & cover. This also says to remove the pump. Then remove the 4 bolts to remove the pump cover. Replace o-ring (wet with PS fluid). Align the rollers with the holes in the pump cover, & install the cover. Torque bolts to 14 ft-lb. Adjust belt tension after pump install. Flat rate time is 0.8 hours.

You'd be surprised how many guys can't do that!

Power steering pumps are usually vane pumps, they have little steel pieces to form the vanes which can potentially fall out when the rear pump cover is removed in a vertical position. Taking the pump off and working on a bench is probably much safer.
