I didn't have a correct fitting battery on hand, i.e. with top posts oriented in the correct position, for this Taurus that I took out of storage 3 months ago. Not spending $120-$150 for a direct fit battery when a $30-$50 used one works when it comes up online. Figured I try this Walmart $30 lawn mower battery I bought the week before for my Honda Insight. Works just fine as an interim battery and has always started even after sitting a week or more. Not saying it would work well at 0°F though.

Not too surprised, if it is a gear reduction starter then the battery needs are low. For starting, bigger batteries are good for other reasons.

Yes as noted in the winter when the battery capacity is a fraction of what it is in warmer weather. Larger batteries also will provide the proper reserve capacity if the alternator should fail.
