Is there a larger capacity/ longer filter to run in place of Fram's/ Supertech's 3688 3 incher? There's plenty of space for a longer filter. I've heard wix 51568 may be an option? Vehicle is 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander with the 2.4L 4 banger.

The oversized Fram equivalent to a 9688 is a 3593a. Walmart stopped carrying that line for consolidation but you can still find them on Amazon and other places that carry Fram filters (like hardware stores)

But, you can also get a 3593a-equivalent Wix 51334, or you could move the Fram/ST 7317 series

Wix 51356, 3.4 inches…

There is a Luberfiner LF486 / Baldwin B1431, 4 inches,
but those are unicorn tears…

While bigger is better, You will never see any difference if the oil is changed at proper intervals. I used to work on Clark Forklifts and the engines were Mitubishi Astro engines and a 1600 cc engine [I do not remember the model number of the smaller engine.], the Astro engine used a larger filter a larger filter and the 1600cc used a smaller filter. The smaller filter was easier to R and R so that is what was used. The engines outlasted the forklifts replacement value with either filter and either engine. These days I don't stress about the filter sizes.

Not a lot out there that is really any bigger.
The 3593a (3.39 inches long) is 0.3 inches longer than a 9688 (3.08 inches long) with almost identical diameter (3.016 vs 3.02).
The 7317 is longer (3.5 inches), but has a smaller diameter (2.69 inches), so probably no real meaningful difference in media amount.
The Wix 51356 is almost identical to the 7317 (3.4 inches long, 2.69 inch diameter).

I’m confused.

I thought the 9688 and 3593a were both the same physical can size and the 9688 and WIX 51334 we’re the equals.

Zee06 pointed out to me that the 7317 had a little more surface area than the 9688/3593a size. Good thing too because the 7317 is all I can find at WM.

Yes I saw that info from Zee, which is why I included that.

No, 3593a height is 3.38", 9688 height is 3.00"

Wix 51334 height is 3.25", so technically both/in between, but if there was a space constraint so limiting that a 3593a wouldn't fit, a 51334 probably wouldn't either.

Purolator 14459 height is also 3.00" and the 14461 height is 3.5" for reference

Go big or go home.
