L&G Filters-Who makes them?

I know this is supposed to be car & truck oil filters, but Briggs, Kohler JD etc. use filters that fit many cars-

I'm a participant on the GardenWeb forums, and I constantly see the same old argument about using the "proper brand" filter. If it's a Briggs, better use a Briggs filter unless the Briggs is in a John Deere than uh.....

My question is-
Does anybody know who makes the filters for these various companies? Any dissections out there?
At least one curious mind wants to know!

I just did the first oil change on my new craftsman DYT4000 with the 24hp Briggs. I did not use the Briggs filter but instead used a Motorcraft FL400S. The Briggs filter appeared to be a Wix to me. I was surprised to see a silicone anti drainback valve. Cut it open and it was well made. But at $10.95 vs $2.77 I used the Motorcraft. Has all the same specs except for the length. Holds a little more oil which I consider a good thing. If you want a filter a little shorter than the Motorcraft you can look up filters for a mid 80's Toyota pickup with the 22R engine and it should be approx the same specs. The Fram (ugh) version is a PH3614 I think. Just a shorter version of the PH3600 which is Fram's version of the Motorcraft FL400S

Apparently Kohlers are made by AC, which may be a Champion or??
Anybody have any others such as John Deere or Stens?
Looking at Stens website, I get the impression they are a "one size fits all" mentality. Maybe made by FRAM???

The filter that came on my John Deere which is powered by a 2 cylinder water cooled Kawasaki engine was a Canadian made Fram. Naturally I disected it after the first oil change and it had the plastic by-pass valve and the paper end caps. The sad part is that John Deere collects $7.29 for this piece of junk and the only difference with it and a Wal-Mart Fram is the black painted canister and the little Deer on the canister.

That's kind of sad to hear, but the kind of info I'm trying to collect.
I wonder if that's just for the KAW/Deere filters or for JD in general??

I know that Champion makes a popular "generic" line of oil and air filters that i buy through a parts distributor. These oil filters have metal endcaps

and they have performed well for me over the years. I have bought filters at an auto parts store when i was in a pinch and generally they seem to be of a good quality and work.
