Korean MSDS: Some PAO more hazardous than others?

Found the Korean Delvac 1 ESP MSDS, it says 10-20% "1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED". Isn't that PAO?

Are there other, less hazardous types of PAO, which may not be disclosed in a Korean MSDS?

D1 ESP - Korean MSDS

The Korean M1 0w-30, for example, appears to have 70 - 80 % of this "1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED".

It makes me believe that there are no more than 20 % PAO in the mentioned HDEO, what do you think?
 
I suspect that the 10-20% is hydrocracked mineral oil, otherwise known as Group III Synthetic base stock.

Or maybe it is PAO. Somebody should know which one it is.
 
I found this in a Chevron-Phillips document:

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company manufactures various grades of polyalphaolefins at its Cedar Bayou plant in Texas. Polyalphaolefins are produced through the hydrogenation of oligomers (such as dimers, trimers, tetramers).
 
"1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED" is standard PAO. Most likely 4 cSt since the 6 cSt would also have some pentamers (although they may not need to be mentioned).

Just because something is listed on the MSDS does not mean it is hazardous. PAO is not considered hazardous.

Whether or not it is "hazardous" depends on the country. It obviously must be disclosed in the Korean MSDS, even though it is not required to be disclosed in the MSDS of most other countries. But no one in this forum is worried about whether it is hazardous or not, we are just trying to figure out how much PAO is in M1.
 
If "1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED" is standard PAO, then I suspect that many M1 products have Group V Ester base stock that is not disclosed in the Korean MSDS.

For example here is the breakdown of major components for various Mobil 1 products in Korea (1% or less is omitted):

M1 0W-40:
1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED 68649-12-7 10 - 20%

I am not sure what Japan MSDS you are looking at, but here it is (keep in mind that each country has different criteria as to how things as classified and which ones must be disclosed):

Japan M1 0W-40:
POLYOLEFIN POLYAMINE SUCCINIMIDE 147880-09-9 1-5%
SLACK WAX (PETROLEUM), HYDROTREATED 50-60%
Mineral Oil 168 5-10%

I think the Mineral Oil is Group III in the Japan MSDS.

In the Korean MSDS, I would guess that the 40-50% is a non-PAO synthetic like Group V Ester base stock. It does not seem logical that a 0W-40 used for extended drain intervals in German cars could have only 10% Group IV/V. But it seems like a guessing game.
 
I would imagine Mobil 1 base oil of all types consists of:
- 20-60% PAO
- 20-50% Visom hydrocracked slack wax (similar stuff to XHVI)
- in ILSAC grades, probably some conventional Group III as listed in the 5W-30 above
- the balance being esters and alkylated napthelenes to "round out" specific characteristics

The Korean MSDS discloses hazardous and complex chemicals. Probably PAO is considering a complex chemical rather hazardous. Perhaps the Group V is not considered hazardous or complex.

I have no idea if PAO 4 and PAO 6 would be classified differently, but I suspect there are other Group IV/V components in some products besides the 1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED (68649-12-7).
