So my car was making a humming noise and Midas quoted me $1700 to order this Knuckle kit. (Part number 686-255) Witch is a Dorman part and it for a XLE Touring or limited, mind you I just have the basic XLE they tried to charge me $900 for the part but I looked at rockauto and found it for $170 so my question is, should I buy the knuckle kit pre pressed? Or should I buy the pieces separately and have the shop press them (I need a knuckle, wheel bearing, and hub). Will the parts that fit on the XLE touring also fix on the basic XLE? Also the Brands I saw on rockauto were WJB, Dorman, SKP, or APWI which one should I go with? I found a family owned shop that is gonna charge way less for labor btw.

For 170.00 if bearing is already pressed in I would try it. Just looked at Rockauto. This looks like a bargain

What would the labor cost be for the small shop to assemble the parts?

I would just get the preassembled knuckle and run with it.

For some cars I see commonly, I pre build the knuckle, shield and bearing hub for faster reassembly of the job. On cars where the bearing is pressed in with a separate hub, it’s even better as there is less chance to damage anything in reassembly. I’m not suggesting they would have problems, but the kit removes that possibility.

I’d say it’s worth a try.

I assume the humming noise is the wheel bearing. Would you be better off to replace just that rather than the knuckle and hub too, or are they damaged?

Of course it's a trade-off between parts cost and labour.
