Time for the regular oil change.

History has been Purolator plus, with Pennzoil SAE HD-30. I have a heavy foot. Now that I have gone up in mileage I was going to try out a new filter and oil. What should I move upto now?

The car runs more stressed out now with this oil as I am reaching 65k. I think it is time to move away from it. Help me out? The oil sustains a thick like yellow brown color, and I have not touched the oil to test for contaminents or damage. At every oil change I use a can of 4 cylinder Engine restorer.

2001 Nissan Altima GXE and this motor doesn't have lifters like some think. Regular OC 3000-3500 miles. Done by me. Miami, FL relatively hot temperatures.

I had no problem using GC Ow-30 in my 2.4L Stanza engine (same engine but no DOHC).

If you need something thicker, I've occasionally used Mobil 1 0W-40 with no problems and would use this oil exclusively if I couldn't get GC, which is a faily near 40 weight oil in a 30W labeled container.

Any idea where to get German Castrol Syntec? What about switching over to K&N Gold oil filter? I have heard GC can be found at Walmart but hmmm..

Me, no I am not from Nicoclub.com sorry.

Should I worry about the transition from Pennzoil SAE HD-30 to GC 0w30 ? Would that be bad for the engine?

Since you've used Pennzoil SAE HD-30, are you ready to spend the $4-5/qt for GC 0w30?

If not, you may want to consider Delvac 1300 S 15w40. You can find it in gallon jugs at Walmart for $5.88 ($1.47/qt).

Also, I'd drop the use of the 4 cylinder Engine restorer and use AutoRX as directed.

Thanks, oh Cool, I used to be in Nissanclub, but I got banned for no apparent reason. Mod must of been bored

Money is not an issue at all. I'll spend whatever to protect my investment, well to protect my engine against my heavy foot. The K&N ran me $12 from $6 for a weak purolator plus. I really appreciate it, thank you for your responses.

deviant,

I have a 1994 altima that is running 10w30. This engine hates 5w-30 of every strip because it is an oil abuser.
If you are looking to run a heavier conventional oil, the Heavy Duty Diesel 15w-40 would be a better alternative to straight 30 weight.

If you want to go the synthetic route, then go with a 50/50 Mobil 1 10w-30 and 15w-50. It will thicken it up and give you more antiwear zinc (ZDDP) and keep the oil consumption down. Your 2001 holds 4.25 quarts, correct? Top it off with the 10w-30.

GC is only in Autozone in the US.

In Canada it's sold in Walmart and in Crappy Tire (Canadian Tire)

Nisson KA24DE,,, what year and vehicle,,Knowlingly its warm there I would use a 5w-40 or 15w-40,,if you start and stop alot 10w-30,,, a good oil would be Schaeffers 15w40 or a Shell 5w-40 syn.(not a bad lube for the $)Amsoil for a lighter constant grade makes a 10w30 which is a excellent lube,,,Filters use Baldwin or a Wix,, and Fram X2 is ok......BL

I don't know which route to go, think the transaction from the Pennzoil HD-30 to GC 0w30 GTX Synth would be to harsh? I just finished getting home from Autozone. I don't know what to do now X; Straight GC 0w30 or 50/50 Mobile 1?

Btw, thanks for all the replies.

Yea 4.25qts

My gf suprised me and took my car for an oil change at the mobil and asked for their best oil

. Me that was full conventional, was given a Mobil 1 oil change, I was like oh no god! This was early this year in Jan. Anyway, it didn't seem to adversly affect anything but now that I think of it. That might be the reason why the car is running sluggish and has some noise with my continued conventional use. I should of just kept using Mobil 1, but I am so ignorant about motor oils it is just not funny. I wouldn't know the adverse side effects, but after reading several posts, I conclude that wasn't a healthy choice for the car.

Castrol GTX is the conventional oil that comes in 5w-30 and 10w-30; the Castrol Syntec 0w-30 (imported from Germany) is only available at Autozone.

If you want to ease into change, start with the conventional HD 15w-40. These oils have a superior additive package to regular oil and will clean out the gunk. Your choices are Mobil Delvac 1300, Chevron Delo 400, and Shell Rotella. These oils are widely available at WalMart (cheapest) or Auto parts store. Use a quality oil filter like Wix/NAPA Gold 1356 $7, K&N $10, Bosch Premium 3323 $6 sold at Autozone, or a Mobil 1 M1-110 filter $11.

ooops your right, it is Castrol "Syntec" "Out performs all leading motor oils" Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 0W-30

Ok so work up to a 15W-40 Conventional HD.
I have the K&N Filter, what would be your choice, the Mobil version 15W-40?? How long should I use that oil for??

Mobil Delvac 1300 15w-40 would be fine. All the HD oils that I mentioned are high quality. Go 3k-4k miles/6 months. The KA24DE is an oil abuser and the HD oil can take the punishment. HD 15w-40 since it was originally designed for diesels and large gasoline engine trucks.

If you feel like your engine is sludged up, do some research on auto rx in the additives cleaner section. If you decide to go the synthetic route, Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec, the auto rx treatment is a good idea especially if you want extended drain intervals like 10k miles/9-12 months.
