I just ordered Motor Guard filters for both transmission and engine on my 97 Chevy Astro van. Delivery should be probably this week-end as they were sent out 2/9/05 express mail. I will then be looking for sites for the installation.

Ralph mentioned: "I got out of the hospital (got pneumonia because of the run down immune system from the chemo) yesterday and return to chemo treatment on Friday. I would appreciate it if you would let the guys on the forum know that things are better for me. We will get rid of these cancer cells!"

Ralph needs all the cheering we can give him to overcome his cancer quest.

Congrats on your purchase! Link to pic's of the installation, if possible. I like to see the creative denistry or surgery that many manage here.

I hope Ralph does well with his therapy/treatments! (yes, I sent him a personal email as well)

I received my Motor Guard filters today. I sent Ralph a couple questions I would like answered before I start the project.

I have found a potential spot for the engine oil filter hardware. I do have several questions about the feeding of the filter. My van has a factory sandwich adapter used to feed the engine oil cooler. I bought the ATF filter to hook into the cooler lines. The lines are of the 3/8" size. By cutting the cooler line and running it to the Motor Guard inlet and the outlet from the Motor Guard continuing to the radiator seems like I'm going to greatly reduce the flow to the cooler. Would I be best to run a bypass line so that I get more flow to the radiator cooler more residual pressure to the Motor Guard? Or would I do just as well taping off the oil sending unit side; however return lines would cause a problem as I have an aluminum oil pan and not much height in the engine bay. I had more expected that the increased size of the orifice would work as an internal "bypass" in the filter.

My initial idea was unbolt the line from the radiator, place a barbed male connector into the radiator and place a barbed female connector on the line that goes to the sandwich adapter then connect the hose to the Motor Guard and all would be well. Perhaps that's still be best way to do. I would prefer doing no pipe cutting as I would like to be able to put the van back to totally stock should I see fit to remove the Motor Guard.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I lost which filter you're talking about. Forgive me. You appeared to sorta switch between the trans and the engine sorta seamlessly. Probably since both have factory cooler lines.

For the engine, if you have the room in the OEM filter area (depth, etc.), I'd just get a Permacool sandwich and plumb it to that. Done deal.

I'm not up on the internal bypass of the trans unit ..so I'll let others comment on it.

As per Ralph's reply on 1/23:
:The dual remote ATF filter is for transmissions with large fluid lines like a Duramax diesel Allison. All you need is to hook up the Motor Guard ATF filter in series with the cooler. The motor oil is the same. Install a Motor Guard ATF filter in series with the oil cooler. The Motor Guard filter for fuel can filter diesel at about 1 GPM at 5 PSI. I wouldn't think it would be any problem at 60 PSI. I am getting behind, I ship out the filters then answer the emails as I can get to them.", I ordered two ATF filters. One will be used for the AT and the other for the engine.

The engine already has a sandwich adapter used to feed the engine oil cooler. After receiving the Motor Guard filter, my concern is: will there be enough flow in series off the oil cooler lines to power the cooler as well as the filter or will the orifice on the filter slow down the flow to a point that the oil cooler isn't receiving enough volume. One possibility would be to put the filter in parallel on the cooler line in a fashion simular to the adaptor Frantz has available. Realize that the Astro already has a sandwich abaptor just above the full-flow oil filter.

I just pulled the lid off the Motor Guard, plugged the inlet side and blew on the center tube. Quite a stream of air goes into the base, so it appears like just connecting it in series should be OK. I just want to insure I have sufficient flow to the cooler as I do some towing with the van and have found some heating problems towing at altitudes of 6k + and temps over 100 I had to be careful to keep the temp below 250. I had it in second at around 30 mph.

After I install the engine side and have it working correctly, I'll install the transmission side. Locating a place for the filter will be much more of a challange and especially since there is no easily accessable place to mount it for servicing. I may have to mount it on the frame somewhere and put an oil drain pan under it for servicing.

Okay ...now I got it. You've got two ATF Motor Guards one for engine and one for trans.

I understand that you already have a sandwich OEM for the oil cooler. Since you're using an ATF type filter ..it negates the sensibililty of just adding a permacool sandwich for easy plumbing.

I wouldn't worry about cutting the hard line at a convenient spot. You can always just bridge the gap with the same hose that you're using to the MG. Two clamps ...good as new (almost).

Would I be correct in assuming that your connection at the rad is a flare fitting connection?? Is this what you intend to use?

I purchased the 2 Motor Guards with hose kit from Ralph. It has the barbed connectors and hose clamps included. From what I can now see, I plan to cut the engine oil pipes where it will be convinent to add and clamp the hose to present tobing and to the barbed connectors on the Motor Guard.

I was going to do the task to day other than Oregon is running a little shy this winter on rain and it's doing the 1/10" per hour game. I need the van for a trip on Tuesday and Wednesday next week, so expect I'll look at adding the filters on Thursday. I've had a bout with the flue which has settled into a caugh so . . .

Thanks for your help, Gary.

Thank you all for the kind words. I'm getting stronger now. I'm over the pneumonia and back on the Chemo. I think what might have saved my skin is I got a tumor in a sinus cavity where it effected my breathing and eyesight on the left side. It was so aggressive that it couldn't be ignored. The doctor said the aggressive stuff is easier to treat. The first chemo reduced the tumor so much that the pressure went away. I have four more chemos and three in the cerebrospinal fluid. A full blown case of pneumonia on top of the chemo will get your attention.
I am really behind on orders and email questions.
I am out of supplies but should get them the first of next week. I have some filters going to Hamburg Germany to a racing company. It's hard for me to answer a lot of questions such as how do you put a Motor Guard filter on a BMW. Most of the people that buy the filters are gear heads and soon figure it out for themselves.
I got an email asking me how the Motor Guard compares to the Oil Guard. I have used the Frantz for 42 years and the Motor Guard for about 40. I'm probably the wrong guy to ask about other brands of filters

TP has served me very well.
Please bear with me. I will catch up on things in a couple weeks.
I'm considering simplifying my website, it is too confusing because I can't seem to communicate to the webmasters what I want. I think I will just have them wipe out everything and just have a few of the models. I will let people worry about their own adapters and such.
The website was better when my wife was doing it.

good to see you up and about Ralph...speedy recovery to you!

As for tapping into your Transmission line ..why not purchase a transmission line adapter ( from frantz as i don't think Ralph sells it ) it will just make the whole process simpiler...I know I have done it . costs like 30.00

Ralph,

I hope you're feeling better and that you stay healthy for a good long time. Your wife was kind enough to e-mail me during your absence--not that I needed a reply, but I do appreciate it.

I'll fess up to being the guy who asked you a few questions regarding the BMW installation (as I did on this site as well). I ordered the MG-30 and received it very quickly even though you were probably not feeling too well at the time. So for all the folks who have been thinking about buying a bypass filter, by all means, e-mail Ralph. He'll take good care of you.

Hey Ralph,

I also sent you an email regarding the 6.0 PSD and the lines being higher than the Motor Guard and the oil pouring out of the Motor Guard when I crack the "T" handle.

I never received a response, but I most definitely understand given the situation that you were in and why you couldn't respond.

I wound up putting my Frantz back on my truck and all is well again (no more mess). I guess the Motor Guard isn't the best solution for my setup.

Glad you are feeling better!

I missed that email. If you are going to hang a filter upside down where it can't drain the Frantz would be the best bet.
I would put in a lot of effort to make sure the Motor Guard is higher than the hookups so that it won't spill when changing. If the Motor Guard doesn't drain when it looks like it should it probably needs to have a little air let in. I loosen the tee handle just enough to let air in usually when the filter is still hot. If I can't install the filter higher than the hookups I will punch the oil pan.

Ralph,

Thanks for the reply via email and on here. I also want to recognize how excellent you are at service.

Just so everyone knows, Ralph wants me to send the filter back to him so he can give me credit. He made it very clear that if I wasn't 100% satisfied that he wanted to make me happy in whatever possible way.

In order to get the filter to drain properly I would have to punch the oil pan (my lines are higher than the filter itself due to lack of install room under my hood), which makes me leery and would be a nerve wrecking experience for me (would have a hard time doing that to my truck).

I would recommend anyone to Ralph for your bypass filter needs due to the service and quality of product that he provides.
