So, quick background. I'm trying to get my hands on a Bosch Filter for a 2002 Ford Taurus SE (3.0, VIN code U) up here in Canada. Finally found someone who would order it in. Check the Bosch website, and got the two numbers of 3422 and 72143, but not showing exactly for my car, without asking for specifics about the engine.

So, talked to the guy, and he gave me the part number 3410. Said he would order the filter. After some researching late this night, apparently I need the filter 3422.

Differences between 3422 and 3410?
3410 is 0.88lbs, is 95mm tall, and has an outside diameter of 96mm. 3422 is 0.72lbs, 120mm tall, and has an outside diameter of 76mm. I'm kind of glad I dug around online. Autozone's website gave me these exact specifications, and I'm going to call Bosch tomorrow to confirms filter numbers.

So, just a reminder to those looking at new filters for your vehicles, double check your part numbers!

The 3422 has 3/4-16 threads. The 3410 has 22 x 1.5mm threads.

Using the convenient Wix site for filter lookup, it shows the 2002 Taurus 3.0 V-6, Vin code U, as taking a Wix number 51516 which is their version of the Bosch 3422 with 3/4-16 threads. --At least US the Taurus' are listed this way.

I think the guy messed up unless the Canadian sold engines are different.
But be sure to check it yourself, too, because it's pretty early in the morning and I'm not fully awake yet.

Incidentally, the Bosch 72143 is an older German part number. The American made "Premium" made by Purolator have the 4-digit part numbers.

Sorry for bring back 1 year old thread.

I'm looking for oil filters for my LS400. I have the last Bosch 3422, I like to buy few spare filters. It seems like 72143 can be bought online for less than 3422, can someone confirms that the two are identical ? If not, which one is better or just buy on price ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Garak was telling me the German Bosch filtering media is slightly more loose for the longer European intervals. Unless you're running over 5k mile intervals, I'd get the American Bosch filter from Purolator.
