Your F150 truck didn't come with a 4R100 from the factory. Unless you've changed it out, yours has the 4R70. The 4R100 was developed for the Lightning and also used in Super Duty's.

The 4R100 was also used in the Expedition behind the 5.4L, we've owned 3x of them with that transmission and it provided excellent service.

The only Ford product I like and would ever own is a V8 Mustang with a standard transmission. Which I think is one of the best sports cars made.

The thing is, they are not particularly cheap used. Which all by itself makes you wonder exactly how bad the problem really is.

A 1998 5.4L F150 could in fact have a E4OD/4R100. They are simply Fords heavy duty 4 speed automatic....Certainly not developed for a low volume vehicle like the Lightning.

It would've had a AOD which morphed into the AOD-E & 4R70W. Heavy Duty 4 speed OD automatics didn't arrive until 1990 with the Chrysler A618 & Ford E4OD, GM followed suit in 1991 with the 4L80E. The 4L80E was the only one ever put in passenger cars which were all British (Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin)

Incorrect. The E4OD is not the same as the 4R100. A 1998 F150 5.4 will have a 4R70. The Lightning was originally intended for a 1998 release and the 4R100 was developed by Roush with the Lightning. The 4R70 could not survive the 450 ft/pds of torque the Lightning puts out. In fact, the 4R100 won't survive without Torque Reduction during shifts. The Lightning release was delayed until 1999.5. In the meantime, the 4R100 was used in the Super Duty AFTER being developed for the delayed Lightning. A lot of Super Duty fans will tell you the 4R100 was developed for the Super Duty. They are incorrect.

No 1998 F150 came with a 4R100 from the factory.

Expeditions 99-03 some had the 4r100
The only F150s that came with the 4R100 are the Lightnings and the supercharged Harley-Davidson F150s

The 4R100 was a slightly updated version of the E4OD from what I can find. The E4OD was used in the 1997/1998 Expedition behind the 5.4L, replaced with the 4R100 for 1999.

The only thing Ford is good as it E450 Econoline cutaway vans that get 8-10 MPG and ... nope, just that.

Only the cases are similar. The E4OD and 4R100 share no internal parts. http://www.f150hub.com/trans/4r100.html

Friend of mine just bought a 17 at a pretty decent price with low miles. I sent him all the info about what a POS the "automatic" transmission in the Focus and Fiesta is, links from Detroit News,Class action details etc.

He stopped considering the Focus he had been looking at [details of tranny problems right there in the CarFax ] and bought the Fiesta anyway. His wife had had one a few years ago. Maybe they got a good one [cue laugh track].

Hey, y'all: I tried. Any grief he has with his purchase is all on him now.

Pretty similar to the 4R70 and the AOD. Genetically related, but with significant upgrades.
