Joey "Jaws" Chestnut won his 16th hot dog eating contest sponsored by Nathan's Famous of Coney Island. Weather forced a delay in the start of the contest, and there was concern that it might be canceled altogether. Joey won by eating only 62 dogs while last year he downed 76. Miki Sudo won the woman's contest for the ninth time and downed 39 hot dogs.

The contest started in 1916 and the first winner was Jim Mullen, an Irish immigrant, who was victorious by eating 13 hot dogs and buns.

Never understood the appeal of these contests, not even considering the starving children in Mongolia. Looks pretty gross how these people stuff themselves. They should also have a contest to see who puts out the heaviest load the next morning.

The strain on the entire body must be insane and surprised more competitive eaters aren't done in by this sort of thing.

Most competitive eaters "purge" the contents after training and competitions. According to past competition info, that 62 hot dogs would be about 16,740 calories. Some of them do supposedly keep certain foods down, but they eat very little for the next several days(you would have to do this if you don't want to gain massive quantities of weight) after competing.
