The 4 speed auto in the XJ Cherokee behind the 4.0L is a version of the Toyota A340E. Used in both higher powered and heavier vehicles over the years.

No...but Toyota also uses the AW4, as did Volvo. Its an Aisin-Warner design, sold to many companies.

Is the A340E the same as the Aisin AW-4? The Toyota A Transmission's Wikipedia page says the 4.0L Jeep used the A340E.

Also from Wiki:
Aisin-Warner

The Aisin-Warner four-speed automatic transmission (AW4) was co-designed by AMC and Borg Warner then built by Aisin in their new facility for use in then all new Cherokee XJ's new inline six-cylinder 4.0 L design. It was manufactured by Aisin-Warner, a member of the Toyota group, in partnership with Borg-Warner. It shares many parts with the Aisin 450-43LE that is used in Toyota off-road vehicles.

Few differences. They share rebuild kits, solenoids. I think the biggest difference is tailshaft. The AW-4 version doesn't have the built in transfer case, where the Toyota variants do.

You can bolt almost anything to them. A friend of mine has a Cherokee AW-4 with a Isuzu A340 bell housing and a GM 3800 supercharged in the front.
