I have 99 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 and 69000 miles and a 91 Chevy 1500 with the 350 and 175000 miles what kind of oil and filter should i use. I have always used fram but after reading well I am ready to change as soon as I get my answer. I wanted to stay with dino fluid for the chevy but I was thinking about changing to synthetic on the Jeep. Name the problems if any with that, and give me yalls suggestions on what oil and filter to use for each.

to the board, Aggie!

I also have a 4.0 Cherokee. Right now I'm running Castrol GTX 10w30 conventional, with a Castrol filter. If you wish, you could change to synthetic, but I suggest you stick with a 10w30 weight. The 4.0 tends to have "piston slap" upon morning start-ups, and the 10W will reduce this. Mobil 1 is a good synthetic choice.

I'll defer to others opinions with the 350....

With 175k miles on the Chevy, continue doing whatever was done to make it that far. Don't worry about what is said about certains filters and oils. Practice consistency.

For the Jeep, since it is low mileage and if it is running good, try one of the quality synthetics. Oil weight depends on your location, your owners manual, and whether you have an oil loss problem.

For the Chevy, use a 10w40 High Mileage (Pennzoil or Castrol) oil and do 2 treatments of auto-rx. I assume the Chevy probably smokes a little at startup from worn valve guide seals. The rx treatments will fix this. Just 1 treatment partially fixed this on my 5.2 Jeep. I would use the same viscosity for the 4.0 as well since these motors are rather loose by nature. The High Mileage oils would be a good choice for it as well. As for filters, Wix or K@N would be what I use. If you want to go cheap STP filters aren't bad either.

Yep, the Wix 51060 (aka NAPA Gold 1060 and Carquest Premium 85060) will fit just nicely on that 350 Chevy. This is the filter I'm going to be running next on my 350 LT1 engine.

I also have a 99 XJ with the 4.0L...and a TJ with the 4.0L...both have had 10w30 Mobil oil since break-in.I've tried Mobil,Mopar,Bosch Premium oil filters and now run the oversize Purolater Premium Plus #L30001 oil filter on the TJ and the oversize Mobil oil filter on the XJ #M1-301.Once I run out of the Mobil oil filters I will stick with the Purolaters for good.Get fast oil pressure and they claim 96% filtering on the multiple pass test...good enough for me...as for the Chev....A.C.Delco filters and either Castrol or Pennzoil Conventional lube would be my choice in the weight the manual prescribes.

Ah a GM TBI 350 owner. Stout engines. My Father has a '91 Chevy C1500 with a 350. I'd just use regular PF1218's. It has 130k miles and ran on Mobil 1 10w30 all it's like but my father just recently switched it over to Castrol GTX 10w40. Why 10w40 I don't know but that's his logic with it being older and having tons of towing miles and short trips. I would use 10w30 GTX myself. It didn't burn much if any Mobil 1 that I know of. I did a compression check on it not that long ago and came up with 168-172psi on every cylinder.

I used to have a TBI 4.3 Blazer. It smoked very noticeably at startup, but went through at most maybe 1/2 quart every 3k miles up until it was wrecked at 139k.

I'm a former Jeep/Chrysler master tech, and I've had 2 Cherokees with the 4.0L engine, and my wife currently drives a 99 with the 4.0.I started using Super Tech 10w30 along with the Super Tech filter a few oil changes(every 3m/3K)ago,and so far have liked the results. The engine is clean,no oil burning or loss.I always use the larger filter(Super Tech-8A).The other Cherokees ran on 10w30 Quaker State with Fram PH8A filters, both went over 175K before I sold them.

Wife bought a 2001 XJ loaded 2WD with the 242 6-cylinder for business. Vehicle is seeing 25k per year with changes every 6-7000 miles. Broke in on dino (500, 2000, 4000 mile changes), changed to Mobil 1 10w30, then did an Auto-Rx treat at about 36K and switched to Mobil 1 0W-40. No consumption, no piston slap or other problems I was unaware of until reading on another forum. Auto-Rx may have been unnecessary, but under-cap incipient varnish is gone.

Have been using Mobil 1 filters (Mobil 1-301) but will be changing to BALDWIN B2-HPG (as cannot find DONALDSON Endurance filters; info on this board (filter study and Terry Dyson indicated preference) postulate a potential advantage to higher flowing all-glass filter.

Future UOA will be posted.

I run Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10w30 or Amsoil ATM 10W30 in both my Burb 4X4 with the 350 Small Block and Geep GC 4.0L, and believe it to be one of the most durable gas engines they ever made. The same can be said of the 4.0L I-6. I am currently using SuperTech filters on both. If you go with Amsoil filters, the SDF42 works on the Jeep and the SDF23 works on the 350.

The Burb has 269 K + miles on it, the Jeep GC has 107,000 miles.
