Can you use it? Yes. You could put whatever you want in there.

Will it work properly? Who knows. Only one way to find out.

Why not just use the proper fluid specified for the application?

Sure, but there are many different types of hydraulic fluids and each is a different viscosity specific to the application it was designed for. Plus the add pack is probably completely different.

Here are the specs for JD Hy-Gard. The specs for GM's PS fluid don't seem to be available anywhere.

Viscosity @ 100°C................. 9.4 cSt
Viscosity index.................. 140
Density............................. 0.89 g/cm3
Pour point......................... -40°C
Flash point......................... 227°C

already know the hygard specs there identical to Prestone Power Steering Fluid. So i would assume i can use the stuff. but you know what they say about assume

Where are you getting your source of information?

Hydraulic fluids are not all the same. Viscosities and additive packages vary all over the spectrum.

Does JD make any claims that it meets any specs that the Chevy PS requires?

I just compard to hygard to the prestone all makes all models stuff ive been using. It was about the same for viscosity
