My main concern is that anything that we put on our grass has to be totally unharmful to animals. I'm having a problem with that regarding weedkillers and fertiliser too.

Let it revert to the natural condition common to one's region. For us, prairie and oak savanna would be typical.

Our current lawns and landscapes are about as natural as the food we consume.
